4.08 final drive with vortech
okay so im wondering what do you guys think. Should i go with the 4.08 final gears with my vortech or no. Let me know what you guys think. I know the vortech is all high end and i want the lower end power so please any info would be great thanks
Michael Scott@Dunder Mifflin Tuning should have all your answers...
But seriously...it depends on the power...if you are only going to do about 350 or less to the wheels, might not be a horrible idea....why not crank up the boost and buy a better LSD instead?

IMO I would do it only if you get some serious tires and stay under 420whp

I say go for it. That's what I'm saving up for next. I'm thinking 3.9 or 3.7 for my setup with a Quaife LSD. As long as you know how to launch I can't see you having bad wheel spin.
I still currently have the stock 3.33 pulley and installed the 4.08FD and it feels so much better. Currently i have my stockies on with crappy tires and the only traction issues i have is in first gear and when i slam second. The car pulls so much harder in every gear. Just my 2 cents
I am thinking about a 3.9 or 4.08 gear too. The only reason I am hesitant is the bpv and highway driving and the fact that 4th gear goes to 114mph on the stock 3.5 gear which is about perfect for a mid to low 12 second run. I wonder if the extra shift to fifth would counter the quicker acceleration.
I was considering a FD swap as well i think the 3.7 would be better suited for the vortech.
The stock 3.5 isn't really that bad i'm trapping 113-115mph with my set up as is.

I have been debating the 4.08 swap.. I figured the lower the gears, the quicked into boost we get..
I did a gear swap in my 57 Chevy (semi-stock SBC 350).. and went from mid 15s to high 14s.. I cant wait to test my new motor (8000RPM SBC 500+hp) with 4.56s..
If traction is an issue at the track, throw on some drag radials or street slicks.. Goodyear and Nitto have a pretty good setup.

i get crappy gas mileage as it is, i can not imagine basically losing an entire gear (6th is as tall as 5th etc). I'd consider a 3.7, but 4+ is pretty short.
for less money, a nitrous kit is a better compromise between street and track.

I have the 3.9's and I have traction issues through 2nd and sometimes into 3rd depending on how hard I get on it. I am going to Vortech this winter and I'm really concerned about traction. I am kind of wishing that I had kept the stock gears so that I'm not constantly bouncing off of the rev limiter when I go SC. I only have the below mods so with a SC it's going to be interesting,

shorter gearing will hurt you if you don't run good tires.
I use a 3.9 with a nismo LSD, and I run 295 R-compounds, eventually switching to 305's. I wouldn't even remotely consider shorter gearing whatsoever if you don't run some decent grippy tires. Too many people run small casual street tires and still expect traction with shorter gearing...
that said, I still think the 4.08 is probably too short unless you're under 400whp or unless you run some insane R-compounds or slicks
