I understand there is several threads similar to this, but just curious for those have dropped big money into a build....
Is it really worth the money?? Its 600+ fun on the street? I like messing around with my TN setup, and soon to be a gt37r Powerlab kit, and eventually a build. Do you regret building as far as cost/fun ratio? was it worth the thousands of $$, or would you rather spend the monet on other parts?
Thanks for the input

I appriciate your post, but Im have read both of those previously. I am looking for a straight doller sign. Its it worth the money for an average owner???
Nope! Definetly not worth the potential issues. Lots of things can go wrong with a built motor. I'm on my 2nd built motor, and so are alot of other people. It's almost the norm.
If it isn't your primary car, you have all the supporting mods needed to run higher boost, and ready to deal with the cost (the cost is a bit more, but not astronomical) I say go for it. Also you have to prepare for down time. This hose, that belt, this broke, etc.
I don't regret it. **** happens. I think it sort of boils down to people's personality and budget (laid back people tend to stay calmer). **** is going to break and cost $$, but I think just boosting it adds that to the car stock block.

OP it all depends on your powergoals btw, if you get the stg1 w/ gt35r PL kit then a your engine build will be on the simple side....the one thing you dont wanna pass on will be getting the right EMS for longetivity

Figured I should probably back up my response:
I haven't seen my Z since December. It started in one shop and ended up in another. Right now it's in Florida getting everything redone by PF.
It's been a very frustrating 6-7 months so far and lately I have been regretting my decision. I'll admit that if I had taken different steps my feelings might be different, but this just sucks right now - especially seeing all the nice weather outside and me with no weekend toy.
My best advise is to set goals for yourself ahead of time and talk to Z professionals that can lead you in the right direction. When it comes choosing a shop, don't settle for anything less than the best . Those extra couple thousand can go a long way and you'll save yourself a lot of money/headaches by doing it right the first time.
As for me, we'll see if my feelings change once Jeremy ships it back to me. Which I think they will

Very good post, I have the right shop "PF", its just the money factor, I have it, but just keep thinking of all the other useful things I can use it for. Im sure its great having all that power, just trying to get an understanding if the money was worth all the headaches and whatnot.

There are many that have followed that path simply because the car blew up & if you are not able to afford it, dont go FI. Otherwises, you will possibly have a turbo kit strapped onto a blown motor & then have the option of selling it for little as is, buying a stock motor & reverting it back to stock, or rebuilding the motor as I stated above. In addition, it is not a sure thing the motor will last after it is rebuilt. I know of guys that have rebuilt their motor multible times even with forged internals.
With that said, selling your 350Z & buying a GT-R is not a over the top option financially, just a option that will allow you a better return on your investment. Do yourself a favor & look at how little guys resale 350Z's with FI installed. You will not get your money back on the investment. Instead, you will get very little if anything back.
It sounds like to me the best thing you could do is drive your Z without going FI, finish your education, buy a home etc, & then when you got money to blow on a car, buy a 500hp + car when your life is more in order. It is a matter of priorities and just remember, after you spend 10-15K on a FI motor, it will still rapidly depreciate where as putting your time & money towards education with only result in appreciation of your lifestyle your entire life.
My bet is you will not follow my advise, will blow your money on a stupid car (meaning poor investment) and extremely limit your earning power in the future based upon that poor investment. If I am wrong, I take back what I said....
To sum it up, a friend of mine told me "a lot of things can happen with a young person & a car & not many of them are good".
It def wasn't worth it to me, but I went about it all wrong from the get-go. New and better parts and discoveries are coming out all the time though. If I had the extra money (and a Z for that matter) I probably would do it again. I'd keep it around 550whp/tq though.
If I were to do it all over, I'd go with the Powerlab single kit, Arias pistons, Eagle rods, arp main studs, HR headstuds and gaskets, NO headwork or cams, Deutchworks injectors, ATS triple clutch, and CJM stage one fuel system. Haltech for engine management, built by Forged or MRC.

I would just buy a built short block, and swap it with yours and you'll be fine. so many things can go wrong as you stated if you build, and then more down time. I am kinda in your shoes right now, but I have decided to go with a built short block, and its good for 600. the Z heads are designed quite well.
