Default Remote turbo

I have a 2006 350z and would like to turbo. Up here we have farly long winters (5-6 months) and I would like to fabricate it myself. I have been farbicating for a whle and have all the skills one would need. I have a tig welder in my garage and weld stainless almost everyday at work.

Has anybody here considered this idea? I know the Z has a huge muffler in the back and that would be plenty of space to mount a turbo. I know the vette has a twin turbo setup like this and now I found a mustang with the same setup (see link below). I don't think I would pull oil lines all the way from the engine, but maybe have a remote cooler/tank/pump. It would be easy to run a single 3" exhaust to make room for a 2.5" return from turbo to FMIC.

What are your oppininos on this concept? Do you see any problems? I am new to the Z but not to forced induction, and have done things like this (custom work) only with superchargers.

Yah I just got quoted $7500 just for the kit. No installation. That is way too much.

I think I'll just fab up my own kit, and I did some number crunching and it looks like it will be around $3,200 for materials and I do the welding/fabricating. This does not include an upgraded clutch.

yes, STS raised the price and I couldn't make myself recommend it to anybody. $7500 is just way to much for a turbo that you will be lucky to hit 450whp without any upgrade. At that price then just go get the power lab or a TT kit.

By the way if you call STS direct there is still a chance to get the price around $5500 but that person wont put things on paper...lol You just basically have to trust him and give him your money and hope he send you a complete kit...lol

That doesn't work for me. If I send that much money to somebody that I don't the word "hope" is not in the mix.

I'n not looking to brake any HP records here. I would like a good kit that I can rund about 6-7psi on without having to worry about too much. I would like to keep the stock engine running for a long time, and with that much boost it is doable.

I think that I will start sourcing out my componenets very soon and will probably fabricate it myself.

Now I just have to find a turbo that is best suited for this application.

STS uses a TO4E 60 O Trim w/ .58 AR so you can start with that... lol

Thanks for that info. I am educating myself on turbos now. I'm familiar with superchargers (just sold my supercharged toy) and boost. I am learning how to read turbo flow charts and all the math that goes with it.

I do know that I'd like full boost by 3500rpm and don't need more than 7psi.

EDIT:

So far I have concluded that I need something along these lines:

.50 a/r compressor
.63 a/r turbine
.57 trim

They do have a universal kit for about 3k.... if you are going to fab why not just do that? it would save you alot of time for sure..... atleast you would have the right size turbo and misc stuff like your oil pump for the turbo and lines........ and that is for the stage 3 kit.... you can get the stage 1 for 2k I think.....

I said I'll be driving around at 5psi and only use my 8psi map when I want to have a little fun... That only lasted me 2 weeks and my car never saw my 5psi map...lol I really want to turn it up to 10psi but I dont have the funds to build my motor right now just in case it blow...

I don't want to do anything with the engine oil system. I'd like to have a seperate system for the turbo. I need to buy an oil tank (about 2L), electric oil pump, filter and short oil lines. I don't want to run oil lines down the entire lenght of the car and mess with the oilpan.

The turbo (from what I have researched) does not need high oil pressure. Just something with constant flow.

As soon as I find the right turbo I will start fabricating.

My parts/budget brakedown:

Turbo $600
ECU $650
AEM w/b $250
w/g $200
BOV $150
Oil setup $400
hot side $100 for flanges (free stainless ping from work)
Cold side $100 for couplers ect. (free alum. piping from work)
FMIC $200
Fuel pump $100
Injecotrs $500
winter (time) free

Total $3,250

I am aware that I also need a clutch and tuning, same as if I was to buy a kit from someone.

I have all the misc. stuff already. Stuff like vac. lines, wiring, T-bolt sclamps nuts bolts..ect.

I have self controll . I know what you mean though, but the thought of having to replace/rebuild the motor will make me stay at 7psi.

I'm not sure why you'd do this as opposed to installing the turbo closer to the exhaust manifolds somewhere.

Just follow the TN/power lab design if you want a ST.

^^ not just that but cooler turbo and a cooler engine bay.

I don't like the TN/powerlab desighn. Too much pipe under the hood after the IC. Not to mention that the pipe runs right next to the turbos hot side.

Check out my built thread, it'll give ya an idea of whats possible when you put the right research and parts together, I'm pretty sure I am currently the Highest HP STS built Z in the country, with modifications for more power in the works right now.
https://my350z.com/forum/shop-builds...21-torque.html

As far as the quote above, I don't know for sure, but I think that you need high pressure oil to the turbo. I know that my car have a variable speed oil pump to my turbo, and if i push the car too hard on the low speed setting, an alarm will sound notifying me to switch to high pressure. And, even though I am running ALOT more boost than you are wanting to run, I'm pretty sure the high pressure will still apply to your build. Even running lower boost, if you get on the car hard, and trust me you will , you need to ensure you always have the oil back there for the turbo. I am no pro by any means, i strongly recommend you talk to someone who can really give you detailed info on rear-mount setups. CIN motorsports knows these setups. I know that Bobby personally designed and fabricated the rear-mount set up that they have on their Drift Mustang.

Also, from looking at your budget, you might as well just get the universal kit from STS. I don't think you'll be able to get some of the parts on your list, for the price that you posted. I do know that in the area of the Turbo, STS will help you get whatever turbo you want, and can help figure out what turbo will work best for you. I am currently running a GT-67 Ball Bearing turbo with a .68 AR housing. This worked fine with my application, but we are thinking about switching to the .58 housing to help spool quicker. (other ideas are also being thrown around)

Anyway, good luck with whatever you decide to do, if you have any questions, feel free to shoot me a message, i'll try to help ya out if I can.
