Just got back from picking the new (re-built) turbos from Blouch. Very nice - here's some pics:





You can see that these were set for the internal wastgates, but I kept the external setup so I can max out power. Only time will tell if this is too loud for me or not. They could not use the full APS housings, so half of it was swapped to full Garrett products (I have no idea what all the terms mean, so I'm being as general as possible).

Which cartridges did you end up going with, the 3071?

I had Blouch reprofile my compressor cover when I went from a 4294R to a 4202R and they did excellent work. They also hooked me up same day with an upgraded GTP38R for my F250 Diesel when I cooked the stocker. Good group of guys up there.

 

Blouch is awesome. AMAZING service when I sent my spooling thingy majjigy there.

They definitely know their stuff too.

 

They look great Cass, I think you made the correct choice

EDIT: By the pictures it seems they kept the APS compressor housing but changed the turbine housing to a Garrett housing. Basically the only part left on the turbo made by APS is the compressor housing. (from what I can see in the pics)

Definately know their stuff and had my conversion done in a week. They are hoping to do more work with the Z/G community since F/I is very popular with our crowd.

Internals are TOP SECRET until after install and dyno. I've learned not to reveal my hand completely.....it may give someone else an advantage .

 

I'll watch to see how it goes, I have the feeling these 49mm inducer 2871R's aren't going to hold me over for too long.

 

I am using external wastegates with a wastegate relocation kit. Mine is not loud at all, but Roger and Nate routed the dumps back into the lower part of the downpipes rather than leaving them open. In fact, when I attended HPDS, one person commented that he was surprised how quiet my car was for the amount of hp I was pushing. From what I understand, routing the dumps back into the exhaust system has no noticible adverse affect on power so long as the routing back into the exhaust system is done with a tube that is sufficiently long and sharp angles are avoided.

 

Thanks Terry - Any pics? It seems that my dumps and downpipes are very similar in length, but I haven't seen it all assembled yet.

 

from personal experience open dumps ftl. there cool for a bit but get annoying over time. some people love them but I feel like the hype is too great. if your only going to dog the car then open dumps are fine but dd it will be hell in the long run

 

^^Thats how I feel. I did'nt know how loud they would be so I gave it a shot. As soon as the car comes out of storage, I'll have them plumbed into the exhaust.

 

^ wimps I tell you. Open dumps = thee sex. You've been in my car Chris and heard them, I say go open all the way.

 

Mine aren't bad when trolling around town. When just cruising somewhere I'll shift before 3K so don't hear hardly anything.....And I drive with windows open 90% of the time.

But when I get on it.......yea loud

Notice how long the wrapped tube is (that tube came with the SGP W/G relocation kit, but I would assume other kits are similar). Also notice the angle they used to smooth the re-entry of the exhaust gases going through the wastegate back into the downpipe. The welds may not be the prettiest, but they certainly work.

 

Thanks Terry - that was what I was thinking. I have a feeling that I will wait and see if I can keep it quiet when I want so I can stealth around town if needed. Also, the wife will play a role, if the car is crazy loud she won't ride in it and we will be rocking her Volvo everytime we go out. With her the windows are always up - can't mess up the hair .

 

I dropped most of the parts off at Hill's Garage yesterday so Frank could begin some of the pre-assembly and we could see if anything looks like it was missing. I was able to mock up the cam covers, plenum and oilers for the first time to see how it all comes together. Full of WIN IMHO!!!

I realized yesterday that the blue Samco hoses (purple really) look horrible next to the blue powder coat, so braided stainless covers have been ordered to cover all those. I know the money will really be flying over the next week or so, but I am remaining goal oriented as much as possible and will try to just absorb whatever cost over-runs occur. I think about if I really knew the cost of my project would I have started it and I'm just not sure. I'm hoping all that goes away after I can drive the car again.

I feel just like a kid on Christmas right now and haven't been this nervous since my son was being born.
