First turbo build yes, but not first FI build:

On this car:

I know it's a probe, but for those that don't know, that was a great 2.5L KLDE Mazda engine. It was good low 13's at the track with the supercharger and very low 15's stock. Stock it only weighs 2700lbs, so that was a great start.

BTW, building that supercharger kit is much tougher than the turbo kit I am currently working on. The transfer shaft gets to 14000rpm so percision is key. Never had any belt problems, like many Vortech Z's.

nice.. it look like the turbo is hanging a little bit, it maybe trouble since the middle part is the part I always have problem scrapping. I scrape the middle part when hitting a bump or entering a steep driveway.

Well I finally recovered from the flue so it's back to the garage. Didn't have too much time today but I did manage to weld up the up pipes solid and install the w/g.

With the turbo being as high up as it is, I am having some trouble figuring what I will do with the turbo intak. I have been looking for a coupler like this one: http://psaincorporated.com/files/Eccentric_Coupling.jpg. It would have to be 4" to 3", but I don't think anybody makes it. For now I just have a rubber reducer and a 3" duct swiwle 90. I'll see if I can come up with something better, but for now this is how it sits:

Nice clean weld:

By the end of this weekend I should be done with all the exhaust stuff, and be well on my way with the IC piping. The FMIC will probably go on first so I can figure out what I will need for tubing, and make a decition on where exactly the piping will go uner/beside the engine. For now I have to order some 2.5" 45 and 90 deg. silicone couplers and two tight radius cast aluminium 90's. While that is on the way I can work on the turbo oil supply and scavange pump brackets.

Well thank you, and you uderestimated me.... The first time I went under the car (few dayst after I got it home) I thought to myself, that's a nice litle spot for a turbo. I am assuming that those who think that I'll be bouncing the turbo off of speed bumps have never looked under the car, or atleast not in that particular spot.

Default Update

Today I welded up all the exhaust stuff, so that is all done.

After all that I took the bumper off and started playing with the intercooler. The FMIC is 28x8x3.5 and fits just perfect:

I drilled and tapped the front guard with an 8mm tap:

[IMG]<a href="http://s137.photobucket.com/albums/q204/1997KLDE/?action=view&current=TURBO005.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q204/1997KLDE/TURBO005.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a> [IMG]

Made some hangers wit 2" stainles flat bar:

Mounted:

Perfect fit:

This is the only place that has enough room for the IC piping. I think the STS kits are routed this way, maybe somebody with an STS kit can verify that.

Now that the IC is mounted I have a really good idea of what I will need for silicone couplers. I will be ordering those right away. All the IC piping will be 2.5".

.

Well, at this point UTEC. I have a brand new one here with map sensor as well as a UTEC tuner with wideband.

If I could get $800 for the UTEC tuner and the UTEC itself with all the accesories I would sell it and get a Haltech. But for now I'll stick with the UTEC stuff.

Since I have nothing better to do on a Saturday night...

Sorry for the bad pic, best I could get with my car being put away for storage.

I believe that is 2" pipe there though. Watch out for the sway bar though when the suspension decompresses, as I think the earlier kits had some rubbing issues.

do you think that you will have any issues blowing turbo seals cause of the drain being at the bottom and behind the motor so far?
