Default Problems with radiator fans, help!

Hey guys,

Been having some problems with my car overheating while sitting in traffic, this is the only time that the temperature gauge will rise and it doesnt seem to do it all the time. The other day I saw my gauge start to rise and I hopped out of the car and popped the hood. I noticed that both of my cooling fans are barely spinning, this was a 90 degree day in florida and I was sitting in bumper to bumper traffic, shouldnt these things be spinning on high speed? What could be causing this problem?

You have fan relay fuses in the battery compartment.. its a pretty easy fix if that is the problem.

Yeah fan fuses are in the battery compartment, but they are also controlled by the relay in the fuse box by the battery. The relays are not replaceable.

The IPDM (fuse box) controls high/low speed. If they spin at all, I imagine the fuses are good. It would be odd for BOTH fans to go out at the same time. It could be that one of the relays in the IPDM is crapping out and doesn't have a "high" setting that is functional.

There is a pedal/opendoor/press gas pedal sequence in the FSM. It cycles all of the functions that the IPDM controls. It cycles the fans through high and low speeds so you could use that to check that the circuits are all working.

Thanks for the tips! What do I do if it is a relay since they are not replacable?

The relays are in the IPDM. I don't see why you can't just pull them out and replace them. If the fans are spinning at all, then it's likely not the relay or the fuses. It's the fan, though it would be odd for both to fail simultaneously. hmmm...

These are my OEM relays..I don't see why you can't get them at Nissan. IIRC one is for the low speed, one is for the high speed and not sure about the other one. Raj what do you think..

I have my fans wired so that both fans come on as soon as I turn on the car.

I originally had my fans wired so that the low speed relay turned on the passenger side fan and the high speed relay turned on the driver speed. That is simple, safe, and tested. You just need good wire and you're set. No extra relays or fuses needed. The only issue is that on hot days, the AC coils are only cooled on one side and so cooling is a bit off at idle sometimes. Also, I cannot set the turn on temps - they are fixed.

I now use this:

60 AMP universal fan controller. I haven't tested it for very long, but so far, so good. I can set the turn on point to any temp I want and it has the triggers required to work like OEM (AC trigger for 50% speed and a manual trigger for 100% speed). It also keeps these aftermarket fans running much more quietly on cooler days.

It was a royal pain in the @ss to do. JT finally figured it out after about an hour. He had done it to a previous customers Z and when we tried wiring it the same way on mine, nothing happened. As crazy as it sounds it seemed like the year of the Z makes a difference as to how it gets wired. I'll take some pics this weekend and PM them to you.

You're right coachk, Z vs G and each year model seems to have slight variations for the fans for some reason. You have to look up the stock relay wiring for YOUR particular car. Then you just need to tap the hot wire for the low and high speed.

Hey did you guys ever get the fan relays out? Any special method for getting them out of there? They seemed like they were in there pretty good and I wasn't able to easily get them out (didn't want to break anything either). Thanks for any advice.

Yeah Florida is really hot. We hooked up a few customers cars to run all the time. Its pretty easy to figure out with a few little jumpers in place of the relays.

Those are all good suggestions. Any noticable water level drop or leaks? When was the last time the rad fluid was changed?
