i found a good deal a supercharged Z (vortech) and he says it's running around 10 or so on the boost. can this be done realiably without any engine modification?

I used to run the same psi before my motor build with no issues. It's all about the tune.

It depends on what s/c and what internals its running ( i.e. stillen has different pulleys, but vortech has different pulley's and a few different units, S,T and Si Trim ) Ibs. of boost is determined by that and also by what breathing mods you have. With a freer flowing exhaust on a s/c it will lower the Ibs. but up the HP ?!?! Any more details will help!!!

I ran 13psi for a while on 110 race fuel and from experince nothing over 9lb is what you can call safe on a stock block
