Default Vortech and CARB in Cali

Hi all,

Thinking of getting the V3 Vortech and will either get the base 3.33 or 3.12 pulley w/ the fuel pump / injectors / etc.

I live in California and CARB legality is a big concern.

How would the cops know your car is CARB legal?

Is it a sticker that comes w/ the Vortech?

Does it (the sticker) only come with the base set up, or with any of the kits (ie, tuner kit?)

How would a cop know which kit I have if they open the hood?

Do they automatically give ref tickets?

I'm assuming the ref would know the difference between 3.12 and 3.33 pulley, but do they actually look for fuel pump / upgraded injectors, etc?

I would like to get the V3 w/ 3.12, fuel pump / upgraded injects etc, but if the ref can tell I have all that and have to replace them the injectors, then maybe I'll stick w/ the base.

On the other hand, if all I have to do is replace the 3.12 w/ 3.33 pulley for the ref, then maybe it's not that bad.

Thanks in advance.

both the full kit and tuner kit come with the CARB E.O data plate on the S/C unit. Of all things the 3.12 pulley is probably the least easiest to notice. the lack of the external fuel pump on the tuner kit is the most obvious of the differences.
The ECU you would run for this can also be a big giveaway, I'm not sure if the SS box can scale for injectors so that could be a reason to run an aftermarket ecu which is a big no no unless its the SS box that comes with the full kit. The injectors are located under the plenum so a visual inspection is near impossible.

the NEW vortech v3 kits doesnt come with ss box anymore but the unichip instead. The 3.12 pulley wont require bigger injectors if u put an upgraded fuel pump (underneath back seats) with the FMU. Also, if u have a rev up motor the kit already has the 3.12 pulley.

hmm, didn't know about the unichip, have to look into that. what is the difference between that and the ss box?

i have the 03 nonrev model.

so maybe i should order as if i'm ordering v3 stock for the revup, so this way i get the 3.12. and if i get a ref ticket, just replace the 3.12 w/ 3.33 and call it a day. sound good??

so all I need to use the 3.12 pulley on the base kit is to upgrade the fuel pump (~$150 Walbro??)

anything else?

would it be pretty safe on engine?

would i expect psi to be around 9-10? would it ever get to 10-11?

the 3.12 pulley is rated for 9psi and the 2.87 is rated for up to 12 psi. it will all depend on your current mods and how much back pressure u have.

Most definitely...
my only mod is a 3" single exhaust pipe.

i'm actually thinking of changing it to a X config 2.25" pipe combination, heard it'll help w/ mid torque. Any truth to that?

Dunno...not really an exhaust guy...

But I will say this, the easier breathing a system is, the more power you can get, but also, the leaner the car gets...hence you'll need some tuning for that...

since if i get the complete kit, i wont be tuning it, what A/F ratio should I shoot for?

I plan on getting a dyno before, and another set after exhaust / SC install

Tuners know what's what with A/F better than I do....but the general rule of thumb is no more than high 11 @ WOT...
