Default Okaaayy...now this is weird!

Okay, as I posted on the other thread. My damper broke off tonight and smashed my timing chain cover. This was good news for me as it's an easy repair....or is it?

My engine shut off when this happened and I thought it was kinda weird so when I get the car home, I remove the belt and push the damper to the side and ask my wife to start the car. The starter would turn the motor and it would SOUND normal...but the shaft where the damper was bolted on to ( the crank shaft? ) would not spin. WTF?

Does the damper bolt on straight to the crank shaft on these cars or to another part? If it goes straight to the crank shaft then how can the engine sound fine when starting up ( it sounds and if there is compression as it turns the motor, although it would not start ) yet the crank shaft not spin ( unless it snapped in half? ).

Any thoughts?

Here are two pics.

Does anyone think the crank could have snapped?

Wow....I've never seen that before...impressive...

It should be an easy fix to replace that damper...Its been done before for people who switch to aftermarket dampers...

Now buy my OEM damper! lol...

Or you can buy the ATI or Fluidampr dampers, depending on how much you want to overspin you blower...

When you turn the motor over it should spin.

WOW!

looks pretty rusted out in there... probably was a defeat if it was an aftermarket one. GO OEM man.

but now you know where that sound was coming from!

The crank pulley bolts onto the front of the crank. Sounds like your crank is broken. The timing chain is driven by the crank near the crank pulley as well, so depending where the break is there could be more damage.

What were the conditions leading up to this?

Ouch. I made a thread on the noise it was making that I could never figure out:

Has anyone, EVER, snapped a crankshaft?

the timing chain cover is broken around there, the front crank seal is falling out... even if the crank were fine you have a LOT of work to do. but its probably not fine...

reach down there and grab that large bolt that was going thru the middle of the crank pully... see what happens.

from your description, and based on the pictures... this is bad.

Agreed. It looks like there is going to be some substaintial damage, especially if the crank snout doesn't spin when you turn it over.

Well, there is no more mystery behind it. I thought the damper broke and took the timing cover with it...looks like I'm looking at it backwards. The entire engine blew and took the damper with it.

Take a look at my oil pan...anyone see a wrist pin circlip? LOL.

With the exception of the worm gear clamp that I just threw there...this was all I found. I identified parts of the girdle, piston side skirt and circlips.

I'm going to dissasemble the engine to see how the block is. I hope it's okay ( doubt it )...

Wow. It's a stretch, but hope that you can salvage some of the motor. Chances are there are some bad valve, and some ruined combustion chambers but maybe you will get lucky.

what happened to all the quotes you made a thread for? Seems like after all that, you should buy one of those motors.

928M has some new advertising now. The engine buster

Good luck.
