Default Built engine - Minimum turbo size?

I'm reaching out for some help with an FI build. I've been sitting back and trying to read up on people's builds & searching but of course nothing fully matches my needs.

This seems to be a reverse of how things usually go but I stumbled on a fully built engine and the turbos were already sold. I was going to take the car back to stock and use it as a daily and sell the performance parts but I of course got the itch & want to see what this thing will be capable of.

I want to see if there is a minimum turbo size I need to run. If there is a minimum at all? Especially with the 8.5:1 Pistons. He was using Greddy Turbos but i'm not sure if they were the T18's?

I'm sure I'll have plenty more questions as I get feedback.

Thanks in advance - never expected to be getting into the FI world but here I am

Here is the specs of the engine:
Eagle forged rods
8.5:1 Pistons
JWT Heads, Ported & Polished, +1 Oversize Valves
Exedy Dual Carbon Clutch
ARP L19 Head Studs
Fluidamper Pulley
HKS F-Con VPRO + Knock Amp
Walbro
Methanol Injected
Greddy EvoTT Exhaust

You forgot the most important info. What are your power goals?

Ultimately I would like to see myself in the 450-500 hp range. With the 8.5:1 piston set up can I use a smaller turbo & not put to much strain on them?
I want it to still be something that I can drive and enjoy on the road but still have something there.

My biggest concern is that I don't want to have to be in there fixing something every month.

Keep in mind that you will want more later....it is just the way it goes. I would base the kit on a goal of 600-650whp. A few of the TT kits will get you there, and the BP single turbo can get you there as well, on pump gas. The samller frame single turbo kits (T3 based) will not support that power, becaues they (turbines) don't flow enough and become a restriction.

If you wish to go with twins, consider the Greddy 18G twin kit.

For single kit, see the link in my sig. There is a dyno chart there from a customer with a simple short block DE build. That is a Precision 6266 T4 .81 a/r billet turbo.

I just made 507whp @ 14psi on pump gas (91 octane), PowerLab GT35R, stock heads, stock exhaust manifolds, etc. It was tuned by Jason Siebels at ProEFI almost two weeks ago, would’ve made a little more power but I think we maxed the injectors out (DW 600’s, no RFS).

Looks damn good v35guy.
I have local access to an APS TT Tuner kit with (after my readings) a seemingly 'hybrid' pair of Garrett GT25's a little bit beefier than the standard GT25's .. from what I can see these are not the largest turbos, but would I be able to run these with my engine.

btw did not mention I am running HKS 1000cc injectors

Don't waste money on heads. Not needed for your power goals.

motor came with those parts, hes not building it from scratch

i wouldnt go any smaller than a T4 6266. for the modest increase in spool the 6766 is a better option

Thanks for the input guys.
I think I have an idea - now I think it'll be a matter of depending on finding the right thing & reading more on TT or single. New or used.

There seem to be more quality used TT kits available than singles. I think the amount I'm willing to throw into the project will depend on if I keep both Z's or not. Guess what're ya going to do with 2?

The bigger you go, the more power you can make on pump gas. Nothing smaller than a T4 6766 on a built engine IMO. EVO and Supra guys are running the T4 6766 on 2.0L and 3.0L engine and making great power with minimum lag.

A single gt35 will get you mid 500 hp range so more than enough for your goal. The old precision 6262 would do that all day long. They only make the new 6266 wheels now which would get your goal and give you plenty of overhead.

I actually ended up making a decision - picked up a used GTM Stage 2 Kit. I'm feeling pretty good about it so hopefully it was the right kit. It should be here next week & I'll have a project again.

Thanks for everyone who helped out.

I'm sure once I start putting stuff together I'm sure there will be plenty of questions.
