Default a bit more on oil

this is mostly for the 600+ whp crowd, just in case anyone who comes across this still thinks 10w30 is ok for that power level, take a look at what some of the higher power level guys are running. some of the 1000+ whp guys are running as much as 10w60 which will need about .0050 clearances. kinda reenforces the point that 600+ should be running at least 15w40 and .0030-.0035 clearances and clearance and oil selection likely had ALOT to do with engine failures on this platform.

So would the oil choice also depend on builder clearance of the bearings? Some builders have varying clearances with their builds...or is it just a blanket statement to use the thicker oils with for +600whp?

oil thickness is always related to bearing clearances.

higher horsepower motors (ie more boost) are generally built looser, needing a thicker oil.

exactly what str8 said, just seeing how alot of the people who have spun bearings rocking 5w30 and 10w30 ive always been of the opinion a significant number of the failures on this platform are due to improper clearances for the power people are going for. failed sleeves are an seperate issue but it also seems they account for less overall failures.

personally with the dropping price of the vehicle i feel this platform is starting to enter the prime spot for modifications, and i honestly dont see any draw backs to building it for power outside of poor builder choices. this was kinda just to point out to the people who still think the engine "cant be built for power" that it really is there shitty builders fault not the engine itself because even the "fabled" 2jz rocks bigger clearances and thicker oil. it does have larger journals but its iron which expands less so our engines should use similar clearances for different power levels

Rotella T6 for this kid, I ran this oil in both my Stage 3 S4's and I have NEVER had a problem with it or the price.

did you keep blackstone analysis for every oil change on your S4's?

Good thread jerry. This is a topic that our community never really talks about, yet consistently is a cause of bearing/engine failure.

Whats oil?

the 5w40 Diesel truck oil.
You can buy a

No I dont have, I just sent away for 4 more Blackstone kits, I just sent my last 2 back with Oil from my Harmon Rocket and a friends Cessna.

I still have 1 S4, its pushing 465whp and has 454,000km. Runs perfect. Its due for an oil change anyways.

The Thick oil is gold, just make sure you give good start up and cool down time.

BMW M models use 10w60 Castrol TWS as a comparison.

There have been some past discussions about oil (there's sticky threads about VQ oil analysis for the DE and HR), but for some odd reason most of the threads on the topic of oil choices were posted in the Engine & Drivetrain section instead of the FI sub forum. However, most of the discussions were not centered on oil choices for built motor setups.

I started a thread in 2011 about oil recommendations for built motor high WHP FI setups and solicited the shops to tell us which oils they use and recommend. But the thread didn't gain much traction.

https://my350z.com/forum/forced-indu...recommend.html

Over the years, I have heard consistently good reviews and positive results with Rotella T6.
