Default Ignition Upgrade-When to?

Alright guys, I'm slowly getting my energy back, and am getting closer and closer to running the car. Still waiting on a few parts for the external fuel sump.

I've been (for some time now) throwing the idea of wiring LS1 Truck coils (Delco part Delco D585 GM). I've read the stock coils are good for 700whp (I'd like to push my car on race gas and then run it on a nice pump meth setup daily so a hopeful 1000@ the crank on race tune?).

What do you guys think are the limits of the stock ignition coils? I know gap is a big factor too, but I'd like to hear anyone with experience on the topic.

People have made 600+ on stock coils and just uprev (stock dwell)... I am dubious as to whether stock coils themselves are really a limiting factor. You will probably have more interesting results messing with dwell and gap rather than randomly swapping coils, and only once you know you've really got a blowout problem.

Agree. I believe all the 1000+ whp shop cars used stock coils. I tried a KB BAS and it did nothing (it did stabilize voltage) but no dyno gain in the mid 500 whp level.

if the stock coils were limited to 700whp i couldnt even drive on wastegate springs. LOL

If you want to run a big gap (like stock NA gap) on high boost, you'll need more than LS1 coils.

Worrying about coils comes in after you get the car finished.

Point taken. And GOD DAMN that's a lot of power str8. When can we see more vids of that beast?

Alright guys thanks for the input. I feel like as this thing gets closer and closer to being done all I do is second guess everything LMAO.

Is max dwell related to max voltage on the coil? I know those ls coils run in the 40k voltage range (ours are like 33k?) which allows for more dwell and gap... I guess though if you guys are making all that power on stock coils they'll be fine for me.
I'm going to go do more searching and learn me some knowledge on spark dwell effects at high boost. I'll sleep secure knowing that the stockers are fine though!

This.

Find a way to control them better. Spark energy = (LI²)/2 with L being coil inductance and I being charge current. You get exponentially more energy by charging the coil to a higher current than by making the coil bigger (i.e. more inductance). A single amp of additional charge current can as much as double the spark energy, depending on initial conditions. The only problem is that smaller coils tend to run hotter at higher current levels. This is why high end engine management systems all have the ability to vary dwell based on load.

Nissan COPs can take a helluva beating too.

+1 to both. ^^

I know that all of Intense's 1000+whp VQ builds had stock ignition and I would suspect that the high power builds from other shops did also.

^ How many 1000+whp VQ Intense built? I only know about the yellow Z.

The green G highest number was in the 900whp. IIRC

I have fitted these coils to sr20s running 35psi boost at 600hp plus so, 700 on 6 coils should be easy

I saw someone do the same but with a 2JZGTE instead.

I'm thinking about switching to the VQ coils after I start my 2JZGTE.

People usually go with the LS2 truck coils as they are smaller than the LS1. IIRC

I use the coils of the vk56 Nissan they have the same coil pack has the hr and vr38 but they fit the older style spark plug they work very well

Stock coils became a limiting factor in my build after 500hp. BAZINGA!

I have been running low boost to 652 without issues and the last pull had an issue calculating HP but the torque was mid 700's and still no issues. Stock wiring and stock coils with haltech. I run a .026 gap with 1 step colder NGK platinum plugs.

it would be nice though to find a coil that will drive a plug at 30psi at stock 0.042" gap.
