Default So I'm thinking about a vortech SC

I have read the commonly answered questions and all but was looking for some specific insight.

I have very little mechanical experience and I'll never claim to know much else. So far on my 2004 Z I have successfully replaced the trunk struts, done an oil change, and repaired my non working passenger window motor and I'm proud at that. But I want to look at doing a SC job.

So my question is, how accurate are these instructions for the kit? http://www.vortechsuperchargers.com/images/50.pdf

I am reading through and checking off things I am able to do on my own and not do on my own and wanted to see if these instructions are the be all end all for this kit install. I am trying to get a gauge of what I would be getting into. This is not my DD and I don't have a lift but I do have time and patience to do this right.

All input is appreciated!

I recommend the Stillen V3 kit and also worth it to have a good mechanic do the install. Good luck with this project.

The only way you learn is by Doing!

So, you admit you have very little experience, and yet you would still like to try this. I'd say Do it!

The instructions are not to bad. Their are people on here that will help you if you get in a jam. I'd be glad to help talk you thru any areas you have a problem with.

You don't need a Lift, but you will need a Jack and Jack stands, and the proper tools. And a clean work area.

Getting the car up on jackstands, removing the bottom plastic tray, front plastic bumper cover, front wheels and front inner wheel well plastic will get you started.

Your First TIP: Drill about a 1 inch to 1-1/2 inch access hole in bottom plastic tray, directly under belt adjuster bolt.

Hope this helps,

TimRod

Disreguard BigBlue's remark, as Stillen does not make a Centrifical Supercharger Kit for an 2004 350z.

Stillen does make a Roots type Blower, that sits on top the motor and sticks out of the hood. It's Garbage.

Thanks for the encouragement and tips.

I agree, there is no better way to learn than doing it. I feel like I came to the best place for help.

I'll start up a thread and maybe a pic tutorial once I get moving.

Muchos gracias.

Im a fan of Stillen but their 1st gen roots supercharger is indeed junk...overpriced, underperforms, crazy body modifications...no thanks...

I think you should attempt this as well. What I'd recommend is that you find a 'performance' minded mechanic that can help you when/where you have problems and can do a once over on the system before you go and tune/go full throttle. Be prepared to pay him $50 or $60 (if not a little more) per hour of his time. I would think that any mechanic wouldnt mind helping you out and putting some cash in his pocket at the same time.

read the instructions a few times over, fully understand them but be prepared to modify on the spot, the instructions can foresee everything.

Look into a simple oil cooler and buy Corky Bell's book 'supercharged'...and start a build thread - there are plenty of people on the board that can help you along the way.

I'm like you i've never really done any thing major to a car until last week. I did my very first Clutch/Flywheel Install and a Fuel Return system by myself at my local hobby shop it took me a week due to some complications but i did it. Then i started my Procharger install yesterday in my garage with car ramps and 45 piece walmart tool box. Just print the instructions out read them front to back, walk away, then come back and re read them. Then you'll be G2G.

Disregard Old Man's advice and get it installed properly, unless you feel lucky about getting it done right. Here is page #2 of my SC kit Installation booklet:

So, you need to decide to take Old Man's advice and just go for it and hope that it is a success, or you can pay somebody who can take care of it for you. *He is correct that Stillen doesn't make a centrifugal SC for your '04, but if you want to screw with your warranty and possible problems. Once again, good luck with your project.

More than likely your going to end up getting a used Vortech, so do it yourself. You will feel so much better knowing you did it instead of paying someone else to do it. I promise you don't need any thing besides BASIC tools and ramps or car jack stands.

Do it yourself but have a fire extinguisher if you are doing a fuel return and walbro pump, this is the only danger I hear of regularly, fuel leaks! As for the blower you have a DD so worst case you have to pay someone to get you out a small hiccup.
