Default Oil Catch Can overflow when hot

Hello all,

Yesterday after driving around town looking at houses(looking to purchase home) I noticed an oil smell and opened the hood to see a small amount of oil overflow/spray from my catch can. Does anyone know why this would happen?

I'm only about 1500 miles since my last oil change. I wonder if I have to much oil? I used about 5.3-5.5 quarts of mobil 1 with the aps tt kit.

oil catch can should only process air with oil vapors in it. Not your entire oil system.

You may get the oil smell if you have a vented catch can.
You should not be overflowing a catch can as it should take a long time for oil to build up.

If crankcase becomes pressurized or catch can gets full, then a catch can will spray its goodies through the vent.
