stillen stage-1 sc, nonintercooled
I was wondering if anyone has any experience with the stillen stage-1 non-intercooled supercharger. the price of this thing seems to be quite decent considering it is ~3500-4000bux. however without the intercooler, it seems like it could experience some detonation. in a recent SportZ magazine issue comparing vortech, stillen, atp SC's, the stillen never showed any hint of detonation -- but that was for the intercooled kit of course so you cant really compare
.
after i put into perspective that intake (~200USD), exhaust (~1000USD), plenum/cat (~700USD), headers (~900USD), cams (~1500USD)... etc.. that equals like +4000$USD plus install costs for about ~280rwhp. it made me think, maybe i should just spend 4K on an SC instead?
for a daily driven Z, wanting lil more pep than stock.. i dont track often.. i just drive "spirited". wondering if the stillen stage-1 nonintercooled SC for like ~4000USD would do the job off the bat without any other mods. maybe later on i would buy the intercooler alone as stillen offers this upgrade for stage-1 kits.
any thoughts? is this nonintercooled kit a bad idea?

JK - Speaking from a viewpoint where I HAVE put out $4000+ on N/A mods to pick up a LITTLE extra power, I think U're on the right track. In fact, I'm looking into the Stage 3 kit myself. Just don't forget the hood modification that's necessary to clear the blower. Another nice thing about the Stillen is the expandability; ie, adding different boost pullies & the I/C. It seems that the most cost efficient way of uping the power on a Z/G is through F/I.
The Stage 1 will probably give ya more power for the $4k that I'm making through N/A mods
so go for it!

1 and 2 are 50 state, 3 isn't (3 adds the 7lb pulley.) I bought the stage 3 used with a hood scoop for $4000, and gained 100 hp at the wheels. previously I had put close to 3000 in parts and dynos (labor provided by myself) for 15 hp.

jkoc, i am in the exact same situation as you. i dont want to waste money on useless upgrades and im not interested in impressing a bunch of car nerds at the track. all i want is the car to be noticeably faster and more fun to drive around without having to ever tune or reprogram anything. and i dont want to spend much more than 5k out the door either. from the research ive done during the past few days it looks like the stillen stage 1 really is my only option despite that disgusting hood. im just hoping that if i could see a picture of the cowl in a body color it might not look so bad. (i made another post about this as well)
