Default why not make make your own TT setup ?

Thats what my boy ( auto mechanic ) asked me when he saw me looking at different TT kits...
hmm I dont know much about turbo's in general , so naturally Im more than a little skeptical about this...
why would anyone buy $6K Twin Turbo setup if it was much cheaper to make one ? obviously its not an east thing to do...
My boy is all pumped up and says he could do the job , if we can find the parts ( or have them made )..
so what should I worry about if I decide to go with this project ( most likely during winter time )...
Should I even consider something like that ?
Thanks
Art..

If anyone can estimate cost of this project I would really appreciate it ...

P.S. I dont mind spending few weeks in my garage...

its not impossible. it is expensive. 60-80$ an hour in labor, and it can take a while to lay out all those parts, then you have waste for broken stuff. you might come out even, but will your setup be as neat and tidy as one that has been tried and tested for maximum efficiency.

if your wanting more power, then it can become cheaper, as theres no replaceing turbos or anything, you get what you want to start with. itll be more expensive than 6000$, but itll be cheaper than 6000$+replacement parts and labor.

Heck, just for 2 turbos and a decent intercooler, you are probably looking at about $3k (I'm almost certain more). So by the time you spend your time and pay people to fab up stuff, you might as well pay the $6k.

I wont be paying for the labor since my buddy says he can do the job + I got few guys that already went that way ( pushing 450 + rwhp in golf and passat ) so I'll get help from them , Im just trying to find out what you guys think about this...

"Heck, just for 2 turbos and a decent intercooler, you are probably looking at about $3k"

where did you get that info from ? Im not planning to buy huge turbo's ... I think if I bought 2 eclipse turbo's that would be enough power for now...

If your buddies provide the labor and know-how, I would say go for it. Besides saving a few bucks (which may or may not be a deciding factor), a custom kit certainly gives you a sense of exclusivtivity. The only downside would be any type of warranty.

go for it, let us know how it turns out. most people dont have the know-how, tools, or time to do such a thing. of course when your custom building everything it might be a week or more to install, and for some of us, this is our daily driver, so installs need to be somewhat quick, and need to work the first time as well.

You will probably need custom fabbed turbo headers. But you can use the 2 14B turbos, get an IC and pipings from eBay, send you ecu to Technosquare and get the 380cc injectors, then you have your own custom TT.

what approx. rwhp should I expect from a setup like that and costs ?

and also how much custom fabbed turbo headers would cost me ?

I found them for $ 500 brand new on ebay...

i'd be a little skeptical getting help from anyone claiming any rear wheel horse power in front wheel drive cars.

A custom setup will cost you a lot more. I know 1 person with a custom TT on his 350Z and he regrets it. He could have just bought a PE or Greddy kit for a lot less.

Skidazze runs the custom set up, and if i remember correctly it ended up costing him a lot more than a greddy or PE kit. You should talk to him about it.

He probably didn't have free labor though right?

sorry , obviously that was my retarded mistake
and their not claiming it , guy with the golf just hit 10.8 in 1/4 with additional 150 shot

from what I see , people pay mostly for the labor , in my case I wont have to do this and dont see how parts would even come close to $6K...

AParshall04 - thx

I'll PM Skidazzle see if he has a minute to answer few questions , but I thought he was running Greddy TT in his Z..

its not terribly hard to make a tt setup the problem is getting a turbo manifold which is now available separate from boostlogic. then turbos are relatively cheap, youll need an ic, some means of upgrading fuel, new intake, ecu management, and lots of custom bend piping, +install

manifolds ~1000-1200
turboes (new) ~1000-1500
ic ~1000
injectors ~400
ic piping custom bent ~200-300
emanage/reflash ~500-600
intakes ~200
install ~2000
dyno time (if dont get reflash) ~400

cheapest estimate comes out to 4400 w/o install,
greddy tt w/ ic is only 5600 do you really want to piece together all the parts to save ~1000? its not all that easy to make all the measurements and modifications to make one work that would be less capable than the greddy package

PoWeRtRiP thx for the info on headers...
here's my list:
:
HKS Intercooler for about $300 ( ebay )
2 X Garrett T04B15 turbochargers $ 500 ( ebay )
reflash $600
Intakes $ 100
IC piping $ 200

so far $ 1700 + headers ( $ 1200 ? ) = $2900..

saving of $2700 versus the Greddy Kit...

**
I was wondering if the block of a 300zx is the same casting as 350z ?

Not even close. The VG series is completely different.

It wouldn't be worth it anyway. The VQ block itself is very strong.

dont forget injectors (400)
and i forgot to add downpipes to my list (200-400)

also you may want to double check the measurements on that hks intercooler to make sure it will fit and that it can make decent power. not all ics are created equal.
