Default benefit of rods/pistons with vortech?

ok guys, seriously thinking about jumping in on the group buy that gq_ is doing with the rods and pistons, BUT, i need some info first,

for those of us running the vortech, and not wanting to change out to the TT, what benefits would we gain by changing the rods and pistons? if the blowers are almost maxed out for impeller speed already, what benefit is there? i would understand if we could just turn up the boost like the TT, but we cant. is it just for reassurance and motor longevity?

another thing, about how much do you think labor would cost to do this, im sure this wouldnt be an easy thing to do on my own.

thanks guys, and great work gq!

For what's its worth, our bottom ends are no strong enough even for stockish levels of boost of either TT or SC applications. Two SC's I know for sure have lost compression and were burning oil due to their Vortech's, and of course, we know about at least 5 TT blow ups. Sure some of it can be tuning related...maybe fuel related... but there is just very little margin for error when using our weak stock internals.

So going forged, even with stock compression, will dramatically increase the strength and life your motor. And it also gives you the confidence to turn up boost in the future. But yes, there is still great benifit to going forged, even if you leave boost at the stock level.

I'd like to know what the labour charge would rougly run to do the swap out of pistons and rods....

....and I guess adding cams would be a small incremental cost labour-wise???

OK, I agree with you about the safer internally but what can I do to increase HP with the SC. I am currently running 9lb and I think this is the max the Vortech will support. So if I purchase the forged internals then what is my upgrade path besides TT. ??

DFW,

Once I go forged I intend to go to a 10lb pulley and beyond. If my SC cannot handle it, I intend to send it in to upgrade to the next trim level. I read on this forum that Vortech charges about 400 to do the upgrade. In the process, they recondition the compressor to a like new state.

Default upgrade

With forged internals , You could run NOS (pretty big shot) >100, in addition to the SC. Great setup for the dragstrip.

Definitly a good idea in my book. How much boost can the vortec safely produce??? (before the vortec is running rpms in the danger level?

Choosing the compression ratio is very important as well ...if you plan to run higher boost pressures go with the lower comp pistons ...keep in ming the octane level of fuel that is availible to you..

as far as engine building here was my quote..

Nissan allows 18 hours of warranty labour to remove and reinstall a motor so the shop i talked to uses the same time frame.

$65 dollars an hour for labor so 18x65 = 1170

my quote entailed installation of rods, pistons, cams, titanium valve spring retainers and a mainstud kit (heads).

for this theu quoted 11 hours ...11x$65 = $715

if anyone is thinking of .20 over pistons add 250 block machining charge.

so if this shop is similar to what other shops are charging you should expect to pay less than $1800 bucks as if you are not doing the cams , ti springs and stud kit there wont be the 11 hours i was quoted.

if you guys are getting the rods/pistons for $1600

say it costs 3400 roughly ........ why wouldnt you do it????

maybe i might jump in for the forged internals ... lemme know what price u guys come up with!!!

Not to slight anyone, but I had PM'ed Forced from Vortech about getting these upgrades, and his response was that Vortech offering this was just talk at this stage - so it probably is not available

Otherwise, I would be willing to pay extra to Vortech to have stronger bearings installed up-front.

There has to be a way to get more than 9lbs of boost from the Vortech S trim... I remember friends of mine with Mustangs running the S-Trim's and putting more than 14 to 16lbs of boost.

Has anybody called them and asked them what we can do? I hate calling I’m all ways on hold.

luanda,

To my understanding the next trim level is the S trim and it has been availible on this compressor for quite sometime. Besides, Vortech makes custom blowers anyway. So I don't expect there to be a problem.

Also, about a month ago there were a number of posts regarding upgrading and someone (I think it was Forced) said that the blower could be sent in for upgrading and that the cost on this was about $400.

Care to chime in here Forced.
