Default Hey Vortech, care to comment on blown engines??

Hey Forced,

I'm hoping you can share with us what research and/or findings Vortech has or is working on with respect to the cases where some engines lost compression. This has me more worried than someone popping a rod. I figure popping a rod must really have something to do with tuning, but the rings giving out over time - what gives??

Not trying to start a b!tch session or debate - I have a Vortech on order, and want to know what steps are being taken to learn from the unfortunate "bleeding" edge of technology some Z owners have suffered from.

Hoping for some constructive insightful feedback.

Thanks.

I dont think any of the guys with bad piston rings can blame or put it on the Vortech .This motor is showing more and more....N/A and F/I cars are burning oil .I havent heard of any Vortech's throwing a rod thru the block. Thats an engine being blown .If you do a search ...you would find just as many N/A motors as F/I motors burning oil .IMO its the plenum design , Suppling less air to some pistons than the others . But what do I know . Could be just a bad batch of rings they installed in the motors......AXXIZZER.....do you have a Stillen ? If so ...go help some guy with small problems that , that SC is having .As soon as there is enough guys with that SC on there car..you will hear them complaning about burning oil too . I wont tell you my opinion on that hood....Bill

Hey Forced...its Gq..not Qc.

I dont think you can blame one kit over another. FI, even with aerfect tune, puts more dynamic compression on the motor, and can wear at the rings and other parts. The stock cast VQ internals are marginal at best. Probably the best precaution you can take is tune very conservatively, dont increase boost on any of these kits unless you go forged and invest in some other things...such as fuel system upgrades, bigger injectors..etc.

Yes, you can run more boost, and get more power, but the long term health of the engine is put at risk.

I was really hoping for a bit more analysis I guess. If I install a Vortech, or Stillen, or ATI, or Greddy for that matter, and my engine loses compression, I would hope that while the perfomance mod company can't take responsibility/accountability/liability they would at least investigate to see things like....

Installation issue - leading to better instructions
Warnings about mixing certain mods
Recommendations for dyno, emissions, compression tests before the mod for a baseline.

...stuff like that.

I find it rather dissappointing that we get the long threads from tuners when they're coming up to releasing a kit, getting the frenzy up, but can't help prospective new clients understand what issues are out there when they actually buy -- Moreso, provide ongoing info on running changes - e.g. I understand Vortech is moving to a different spring on its BOV for kits shipping in the past few weeks.

I did not realize NA engines were also losing compression - What steps can you take to determine the cause if that happens??

I would like Forced to comment on the popped fuel lines. While these might seem like a minor problem, had the fuel sprayed on the exhaust, we may have lost the entire car to a fire... Forced?????

I thought someone who had this problem actually had the install done by Vortech - though I may be mistaken.

Yeah, it's been a while since I posted here. You guys have got it all under control here in the FI forum so I'm not really needed anymore. When I noticed someone posted that Vortech had blown engines I had to post. Brings a tear to my eye when I remember the ATI Procharger flame wars of yesteryear.
