Default Z1 complete motor build up

it seems like the z1 motor build up thread was deleted so id like to share some info that i have on it. this is taken from a pm from z1, let me know what you think guys.

Z1 Built Motor Thread
Looks like the thread was deleted for some reason, so here is the post I was about to make.

First let me say I made a mistake on the pricing. Here is the breakdown on the motor exchange:

Built Motor with customer supplied rods and pistons is $3200 +$2000 refundable core charge and includes:

Breakdown prior to delivery to machinist:
includes removal, labeling and storage of all exterior accessories, removal of heads

Basic Headwork:
clean and vat, surfacing, performance valve job, new valve stem seals, pressure test, polish cam journals, tolerance on valves and guides checked and replaced if necessary

Basic Short Block:
vat, bore, hone, polish crank, file fit rings, pin fit rods, new Nissan rod and main bearings, balance rotating assembly

Re-assembly for delivery to customer:
includes re-assembly of long block to factory torque specs and replacement of all exterior accessories, packaging for freight delivery

Odds and ends:
new Nissan gasket set
new Nissan rod and main bearings

Z1 Built Motor is $6050 +$2000 refundable core charge

includes all of the above plus:
Z1 design forged Wiseco pistons w/poly moly coated side skirts
Carillo rods
Mild port and polish of the heads

w/ out port & polish -$600

If we are pulling the old motor and installing the new motor the prices are as follows:

No FI kit involved $2000
drop clutch, transmission, manifolds, injectors, brackets, a/c compressor, alternator, power steering, intake/plenum etc etc
+ reinstall & first oil change

FI kit already on the car: $2500

w/ TT kit not on car: $3500
w/ SC kit not on car: $2800

Additional items:

no charge for installation of aftermarket cams or ARP kit

350TT Fuel system upgrade (Walbro 255 FP, Aeromotive FPR,
fuel lines, Earl's fittings, labor) $650.00

Dyno tuning: $500

Hope that covers most of your questions, please call for any additional items or questions you might have. 770-562-8668

And here is some info on pricing at SGP as a comparison. I received these numbers from kyle but keep in mind these are just quotes to give you an idea

their $6000 motor build includes ARP hardware and includes the use of a Torque plate so that the bore is accurate.

For those of you with the internals already, they offer rebuilds for 1350 with a 1000 core for the short block, or long block with headwork and 5 angle valve job for 3000+2000 core

He also informed me that they have already done several VQ35s already.

oh and keep in mind I have no affiliation with either company I am just trying to get the facts out there for anyone who is interested in this kind of work. this is not meant to incite any argument about why one is cheaper, simply to give everyone info.

i encourage all parties to chime in and share info on the process of the rebuild and would love to see some flow bench results of what a 5 angle valve job could do for the heads.

Oh yeah, Wiseco pistons are Craptacular.

Sitck to CP or JE. Seroiusly, that's too expensive. I don't know about anyone else, but I've never paid more than ~$500 for machine work and assembly on a v6 and that includes sleve work. I'm friends with a guy at the shop so they hook me up, but this is the best machine shop in the Detroit area hands down. I'm going to buld a wicked dune buggy or build my Z's block up this winter, I haven't decided yet. But if I do the motor I'll post a complete breakdown of the costs. It just seems like you guys are all geting taken up the ol' highway, or at least your checkbooks are. Do you research and do the motor work yourself. I only have the shop do the machining and block assembly in the clean room.

ETX, unfortuantely, not everyone has the time, space or mechanical accumen to do an engine removal/replacement and a myriad of other things themselves.

And how the heck did you pay $500 for machine work and assembly with SLEEVES? Just the sleeves are around a $700 process..maybe more...dependong on the cost of the sleeves themselves.

All I have is a Rotozip, air compressor w/ air wrench, and 1 small plastic tool box with random metric sockets. You guys can do it! Air compressor + air wrench is only like $120, it's the most useful tool I have.

$500 for labor and assembly, that did not enclude any parts. I just called my buddy and they are only doing ford modular work right now. Hopefully they will have time in a few months.

SGP is a good shop and has been one of our main competitors for years. I would not discourage anyone from taking their car to SGP. Looks like we are about $200 higher and no, we do not use a torque plate. If you understand the principle behind using a torque plate and you take a good look at the geometry of the VQ35 short block I think you will understand why we feel that it is not needed.

ask 10 people what pistons they like you'll get 10 answers

What Wiesco's are crap? What CP's are good...each makes lots of different units.

Personally I have never had great luck with JE..tend to be very noisy compared to others we use. My preference is generally Arias or Ross. CP's upper line is also top notch.

Don't worry too much about brands though...instead, as your machinist what they use most often and use that

BTW we are not affiliated with the Z1 down south...just so there is no name confusion

All the pistons to me look the same and seem to be made about the same as wise as structure. The only one's I have used before were SRP, almost the same as JE. They seemed fine. I would have gotten Wiesco, but I need the pistons quickly, and did not want to wait for them from Wiesco. They do sell them at a good price through.

More important...probably the most important element is what type of aluminum they use. There are high silicon, low silicon, and zero silcon varieties. Each has their strength and weaknesses. Any good piston company can make any type of piston you want, with whatever material you want. The second most important thing is the engine builder and the machine shop where this all gets put together.
