Roadster owners who have modded exhauts/intake
Hey I wanna know how much louder it got since it's a roadster and all you can pretty much hear everything going around the car. How is the drone on the highway? What kind of mods have you done exactly?
I'm thinking of getting nismo exhaust, high flow cats and headers to start with, just worried about noise level being unbearable.

I have Nismo Exhaust and Nismo CAI.. Its louder under accelration then the stock setup (and sounds way better then the stock sound), but no droneing when cruising... Or if there is I sure don't notice it with either the top up or down..
Even with just a CAI the car becomes louder under acceleration. At WOT my car friggin screams. All I have so far is my CAI and the exhaust sound is a lot lower and louder under hard acceleration.

I have Nismo exhaust, Helix test pipes and APS twin turbos on my '04 Roadster. The sound goes from a low rumble at low RPMS to a mighty roar when I get on it. I don't really notice any difference when the top is up or down.
I have the NISMO intake, headers and exhaust with Kinetix plenum and cats. With the top up, A/C on and radio going it sounds muted. With the top down it does sound very strong, but not fart can strong, rather more deep. At 80mph with the top down there is so much wind noise that it doesnt really matter....
With the intake, headers and exhaust it does get much louder than stock. It's really a matter of personal preference but I like the improved sound. It will be more noticeable than stock when cruising on the highway around the 60mph range. Much faster and the wind will cover it up but when cruising it does have a constant rumble to it. I held off on the high-flow cats because I am at the right sound limit and the performance gains, for me, are not worth the added growl. My advice would be to go for it, if you are a true fan of the 350Z and can appreciate the unique engine sound then it is a good way to bring out the best.

1. Stock
2. Nismo cat-back
3. Nismo cat back/jet-hot coated Nismo headers/Nismo intake
Obviously, #1 was the quietest, but #3 is quieter than #2 and also just much better sounding (quieter but deeper and more aggressive sounding.
Overall, my sound with #3 is simply music to my ears. Quiet at idle and around town, no droning whatsoever at cruise, and it wails at WOT. #2 did have some droning(mild) around 2800rpm at cruise. Sounds great with both top up and down. Keep in mind, however, that I have kept the stock cats, and I believe that is the key in making the sound so sweet as well as tolerable. The 5hp I might gain from high flow cats it not worth the extra loudness. I have heard that hi flow cats with the Nismo exhaust is deadly to your eardrums.
I have the stock exhaust with a stillen SC. I think it sounds incredible, but at the same time it really isn't very loud at all. At cruising it is actually just a quiet as stock.
I am considering the borla true dual as it sounds like stock when cruising but really lets you know when you punch WOT.

My transition:
1) Stock: You know what that sounds like
2)NISMO Cat Back : Very nice roar under a load! You can here the difference when you accelerate at any speed with the top down. Very little diff. with top up above 60mph.
3) JWT POP Charger - wasted my money (in terms of sound) The NISMO exhaust just drowns out the POP Charger

I've got headers, hi-flow cats, pop charger, and Nismo cat-back. Just cruising, you don't even know a difference, get on it, and oh boy. It is much louder than stock. It was an adjustment and every now and then I'll think to myself this is loud, but oh my, I wouldn't trade it for anything, now. The sound is fantastic. I had a couple behind me in their Z last week and we stopped and talked to them and they commented on how good it sounded. Said he just ordered the Borla and his wife asked him "...will it sound as good as THAT?". Well, I don't know the answer, but I take that as a confirmation. Problem is I never get to hear my car driving by!! Anyway, it will be louder on acceleration and WOT for sure. But now that I've been running it for 6 months, sometimes I think it has gotten more mellow. Maybe I'm just getting more used to it. Now I'm thinking it should be louder...(grin).

Trust me...no you don't. With the top down any loud exhaust system will get old real quick. At times even my Borla is loud but in a good way.
