?? Have I Gone too far ?? E-cutouts: Pix and Vids
So I told you I was gonna do this. I sacrificed my Stillen X pipe to make this happen. But no pain, no gain, right? For those of you that do not know what race readies or cut-outs are... they basically are an in-line "Y" pipe for each exhaust pipe (dual ex). In the old days with just the race readies, you would climb under your car and unbolt caps that were place across the front of the pipe. This allowed you basically straight header exhaust.
Using E-Cutouts, you now just flick a switch, and voila!!! TRUE STRAIGHT PIPES. Of course, mine are installed after the Crawford Cats... we have to protect the environment just a little... and fire coming out of my pipes is a little scarey!
I would like to thank Dave at DMHperformance.com !
His E-cutouts were the best quality i could find out there... and it doesn't hurt to get sponsored to try something new. My muffler guy (Serge at Speedway Muffler in Rowland Heights) gave these a thumbs up.
Parts:
1 set of 2.5" Dual E-Cutouts from DMHperformance.com
1 set of Race Readies from Summit Racing (or you can get them from Dave at DMH)
Installed at Speedway Muffler, Rowland Heights (No Muff to Tuff)
18963 Labin Ct., Unit C2 (60 Fwy at Nogales, behind the Denny's)
and now... on to the good stuff....

Now here are two vids!! PLEASE Right click and Save target as... do not OPEN from the server. Please be considerate!!!
Video 1: Open and closing at idle
Video 2: Open and revving...OMFG - UFB!!!
I'm gonna have some fun at LACR on friday night!

I am sure that I will be called upon to provide some dyno numbers... unfortunately, I just got them installed!
The easiest will be for me to hit the Stillen Day event and do a dyno then, but i have had a lot of mods since my last run in Sept. Sorry, no control dyno's here!
I'll keep you all posted!

Wow, they actually sound amazing!
I have a few questions before i rush out and get some for my dads car!! Are you running any big engine mods? F.I or NA?
Do you expect gains from running them open on an NA engine?
*Edit - checked your sig, nice car

No FI... although I have a nitrous kit that has not been tuned yet. As far as the intake/exhaust line:
Stillen CAI, 350z duct, Crawford v5 plenum, Crawford cats, stillen dual exhaust
(headers are sitting on the floor in the garage... been too busy with work to get them coated and installed)
the link below will take you to mods, which is pretty up to date as of about a month ago.
I'm gonna try and hit Stillen day for a dyno, so if you are interested in #'s vs. sound, you might want to wait.

Aslong as the cats are before the cut outs the flames should be prevented, but im no expert!!
The hard thing is, once the car is tuned to compensate for running lean with the cut outs open, wont this affect the car when the cut outs are closed?

correction.. the race readies (black "y" pipe on right in pix#1) are sourced thru Summit or DMHperformance.com
The Electrically controlled cutouts (silver motor assy & butterfly valve on left) can only be purchasd thru DMHperformance.com
There are other makes out there, but nowhere near the quality.
Again, I am testing these and will run them at the LACR for a couple of runs tomorrow, followed by a dyno at the end of the month... If I see gains (time and dyno), then I will probably go a little further and work on some tuned headers. I need to head back to TS too for my ECU because of the Zex kit I recently installed.
Unfortunately, the 02 sensor in my LM1 got poisoned so I can't view my AFR etc.. in real time. If I have time (and I know I should make it!!!) I'll get it changed out tomorrow for the LACR runs.
Yes, I am little concerned about the heat from the exhaust under damaging the floor pan, but the exhaust is only run for a minute or two during 1/4 miles runs. The next option would be to install a couple of down pipe/tips... hence the longer bolts and extra gasket that I had them leave on.
I am no expert here either, just having some fun - somebody's gotta try some new stuff. I've done a couple of projects already (5AT racing radiator with Griffin, Earl's prolite 350 braided hose kit, TRex Billet grilles, DaveO's crank fan to efan conversion etc...) Besides this cutout experiment, I have one other that will knock your socks off... but you gotta be patient!!!

=============
Reports from the field:
Ran LACR the other night. Temps were in the low 90's until sundown. Stayed in the mid to high 80's for most of the night.
The best I could post was 15.0... but there were some other factors to account for besides temp:
#1: I don't think my 19's are helping me much, but there is a weight savings with the wheels.
#2: I was having some problems with my MM. Coming over the Angeles Crest, the MM stopped shifting, I had to slam it back over to "D" to get the tranny to run properly. Had the same problem during my first (last) Trophy/Break Out run. Wouldn't shift to 2nd and buried it in the rev-limiter. Maybe the tranny was running too warm??? Need to consider a secondary tranny cooler. The Griffin radiator I have has a smaller tranny cooler, but it is supposed to be more efficient. My LM1 O2 sensor was poisoned, so was not able to record temps.
#3 I recently padded the entire trunk with B-quiet sound dampner, as well as added a V-comp carpet/mat for sound deadening. This adds a bit of weight back there.
#4 i was running on 1/2 tank of gas...traffic was slow for most of the Crest, so did not burn as much as I thought I would.
-------- OK, excuses out of the way......
I ran both with and wthout the e-coutouts. Monsterous noise in the car. Not sure from the outside and couldn't get the camera too close when G35Lin was filming from the outside.
With the e-coutouts, I def feel the loss of power on my 1-2 shift. I have a 5AT, but it feels like I'm starting out in 2 with a 6MT. I do feel the top end.. big time, but by then it's too late for my N.A. G. I really feel that an FI would benefit from these, or if I move the switch inside the car (was going to anyway) and then open them after my 1-2 shift.
cheers, ted

Damn......................very cool aftermarket setup if you can get it to work
Doesn't the 05 have something like this? I just learned of this exhaust technique for power while reading about the new BUELL motorcycle.
#3 I did the same thing...I doubled up on the FATMAT and put it everywhere, trippling up on the rear wheel wells. It made a HUGE difference, tin can sound and gravel spatter sound is completely GONE. Weight spread was about 25lbs, this is why I usually only fill my tank half way. There's enough gas stations around me.
1g of gas = 6.35lbs... 7.5g x 6.34 = 47.55lbs.

Responding to a few PMs, as well as posts on the G35 forum....
yes, I was told that by ~75% of the people I talked to when I started looking into these that I would lose some low/mid torque due to the loss of back pressure. So instead of listening to people who have not done it and are speaking from expected results, I did it and am documenting real world results.
Sorry, but I have an issue with authority, so when someone tells me not to do something and they have not tried it... Well, I gotta try it, especially when they say "NOT FOR A SEDAN!!"
(caveat: as long as I walk away with all my toes, fingers, and good looks -- & don't detonate my engine.)
So the next step here will be to run a few dynos. Remember, I don't think this will be a viable NA mod. I only felt the power in the upper 2-3 & 3 shift range, and I finish my 1/4mile in 3rd. I am only going forward with this to provide some groundwork testing for those with FI and are considering this mod. On the other hand, I have yet to try (do to the current location of my open/close switch) a 1/4 mile run where I open the cutouts after my 1-2 shift. What will we see then?? Unless you have cutouts and have tried it, don't answer. I'll get back to you soon!
