Default thoughts on test pipe

hi guys,

i've had the car for about two months and have put a JIC single exhaust with short ram intake. these bolt ons have improved the flow and throttle response to my liking, but i'm still feeling restriction through mid to upper range.

i was thinking about doing test pipes (for track use only ofcourse ) but wanted to gather opinions before i had a muffler shop fab them up. main question is, how would this improve flow as compared to my current setup now. do you think it's worth it? keep in mind that i really don't mind loud noise, just the gains i'd see.

also for those who've heard/done it, what's the change in perf you've experienced?

sorry if this sounds repetative or vague, much appreciated!

I would suggest hi flow cats. With test pipes on a JIC single, the car will sound like total *** (i.e. raspy) and be super loud, and not in a good way.

The answer is easy. Remove the OEM catalytic converters (sitting on the floor in the photo above) and look at the size of the openings where they connect to the exhaust manifold, and the other end where they connect to the exhaust piping.

Default test pipes

Do the resonated test pipes. I have not posted in a while so there might be better alternatives now. I had the straight test pipes and it was too raspy for my tastes. Truly the only mod I have ever done on any car i have owned that I could see a huge difference though. No doubt 10 hp or so.

Thumbs up

thanks a lot for the replies guys I ended up going with the high flow cats as the farret said and installed them last night. the sound change wasn't as noticable due to the loud JIC exhaust and i did notice the car does have better pickup (exactly what i was after). the fitment was perfect, straight bolt on with minimal hassle.

i wouldn't have minded the rasp at all, but opted for high flow cats to avoid having my car impounded by so cal cops (it's a feeding frenzy down here with modded Japanese cars).

so far, enjoying every minute of it!

P.S. - nice meeting you guys yesterday farret, it's always nice to chat with fellow Z owners.

Crawford Cats.

didn't go with resonated test pipes cause didn't want to deal with a ticket for that (the car is loud as it is and the sound with the cats is a lot better). i originally wanted straight test pipes, but so cal is a burn, too many dumb A**es around. this was teh best compromise for me.
