As a contestant, I attended the plenum mod shoot out and saw the dyno plots that day.
To be fair to the guys at AAM, it looked like the ECU suddenly pulled timing on that particular set.... Almost as if the knock sensor was hit by one large knock and it suddenly yanked back timing.
I don't think their mod could have caused a decrease in power anywhere in the curve unless timing was pulled. By looking at the dyno plot it was fairly obvious what happened. Timing was abruptly pulled.
Although the rest of us didn't encounter it, ping was (is) a unpredictable risk that could have happened to any one of us at the competition. Chalk it up to random luck of the draw.
The ECU reacted to the random hit of a ping.

That makes sense.
I was running a stock dyno on a 97 Maxima SE I use to own, and the first two runs hit 168 fwhp, which is quite good for a stock 97, then on the third run the timing being advanced must have taken it's toll.
The ecu suddenly pulled timing, and the car made 149 fwhp!
If the test car leaned a little bit too much, due to better air flow, than it could have pinged.
Considering how well my car ran during it's last trip to the track, after the AAM install, and cheap gas, I have no doubt the increase is in the 10+rwhp area.

IMO the plenums/spacers all do roughly the same
we're talking 1-2hp/tq difference at different rpms between all the different setups
I know there's minor differences, but it still isn't the hugest big deal difference out there. I know for NA it's important though, but still it's going to be different with each car with different mods

Mike,
Please note that I personally believe you have a good product and our test results were not typical for the AAM Spacer and I said so in my article. However, my test observations and memory of our conservation certainly differ from yours. During our conversation you mentioned that we may not have installed it correctly. I said I didn't think so, but would look into it. I did.
We installed the AAM Spacer according to the supplied AAM instructions, including step 13. Tighten all bolts to 4.9 - 6.9 Nm (0.5 - 0.7 kgf-cm, 44 - 61 inch lbs). The engine idled smoothly, there were no vacuum leaks, the engine sounded strong during the dyno pulls and the air/fuel looked very good.
As for our telephone conversation... immediately after crunching the AAM Spacer numbers I called you and asked for your help in determining why your product didn't do well. At that time we agreed that our results were not typical and that you'd provide other stock engine-AAM Spacer dyno results. To date I have not received the promised information.
