Default Side exit exhaust

Hey all, just wondering if anybody has tried putting a side exit exhaust on their Z? Would there be any benefits in having a side exit?

side exhaust would have more bends, therefore won't be good for power gains - that would be my opinion.

side exit exhausts usually don't have mufflers. Since its shorter, the exhaust velocity would help the exhaust exit the system faster.

Anything is possible but...

you may have problems with local laws. Generally any exhaust that exits behind the rear wheels is OK. I would hate to get a repair and inspect ticket for improper exhaust.

+1 it's bad enough that cops harass people with loud exhaust.. bad idea to give them one more reason to pull you over.

I know someone is working on a full race exhaust for the Z that is going to dump pretty early underneath the car. That will be loud!!!

it would definately create clearance (bottoming out) problems and you'll likely end up cracking your side skirts unless you cut out an opening in the side skirt. I don't think it would look good on a Z.

i have thought about trying this on my own car. very hard to get a muffler under there though, but want to do a cut out somewhere and use a super long 1-1.5" high tip. will take alot of work to build the tip though and look good. here is a pic of a nascar exhaust. pretty wicked how they make the transition from tube to oval. i have seen a couple premade kits that may be able to be modified to work though from other manufacturers.

The one above might not work though since it would more than likely be right near the gas tank which could cause problems. Would have to exit either near the middle of the door or right up front.

Usually the side exit exhausts exit right underneath the front doors. It could be done as long as the car isn't less than 4-5 inches above the ground... Oval tips makes it easier to fit.

The new SLR exhaust exits right in front of the drivers door which looks pretty sweet.

ya, the pic was mostly to show what they did with the tips to create ground clearance. it is really hard to get the exhaust to come out anywhere inbetween the front and rear tires. so either right after the front tire or right before the rear tire is about the only way to keep decent ground clearance, but tips similar to the ones pictured would have to be made. would look pretty sick, but would almost need to be custom for every single different car. super tight to get mufflers under the center of the car compared to just the rear.

just had an idea, maybe right behind the rear tire. a hole would have to be cut, but there would be space to do it there. have a nice polished alum. or ss ring to protect the rear bumper plastic, but it may look pretty cool having a 3.5" tip flush with the body poking out there.
