Default y pipes and cats

I have been doing some reading and sounds like some people are replacing the y pipe. I looked on intensemotorsports website and they have about 10 different ones. I was wondering if this is a good mod and what company do you guys like. I was thinking about changing the cats and depending on what you guys think the y pipe also.

Y-Pipe is the most restrictive part of the factory CAT BACK exhaust system....

You will definatly benifit from it...

Weither or not a $230 Y-Pipe will perform better then a $500 one, its up to you... but they will basicly do they same thing....

A more expensive one and some of the lesser expensive ones have flex pipes on them which I like to see on a Y-Pipe on this car...

Changing the Cat & Y-pipe is, IMO, the best bang buck route for the exhaust. I already changed my cat and still have the factory exhaust. I think from the cats and spacer is where I saw most of my gains. Changing the Y-Pipe for me will be my next route exhaust wise. Thumbs up for your research!

EDIT: Might want to search the classified section here. You can find some great deals on good condition y-pipes for sale.

I prefer a cat-back exhaust system. But if you are on a budget replacing the Y-pipe is a winner. Which Y-pipe? Plenty of suggestions and debate in this forum. Read and learn.

I'm leaning towards the Tanabe Y-Pipe. My reasoning is cause I leaning towards the Tanabe Medalion Touring exhaust which is a y-back exhaust, not a cat-back. Just my $.02.

yeah i just got the stillen y pipe, and test pipes, with no cats, i had them on with my stock exhaust before my JIC and its really really annoying! make sure you have an aftermarket catback! with the stock catback and upgraded y pipe and test pipes the exhaust sounds like a 87 honda lol it is really raspy like not at 3k rpms but the full lenght of the rpm band, just do a cat back first,

Really I've heard different. Guess I need to check the local forums to hear in person. I plan on having a full header back exhaust: APS TP (installed already), Tanabe Y-Pipe, and Tanabe Touring. But like I said the Tanabe Touring is only a y-pipe back exhaust. Maybe I'll order the y-pipe and wait to install it till I get the Touring.

the stock exhaust with upgraded test pipes and y pipe is deff no go! I was actually embarssed to drive my car around for the week i didnt have my cat back, thats how bad it sounded, i was going to drive my moms 95 neon ha! now i have no cats and no resiniator on my car with the jic its 2.5 to the y pipe thats 3 inches to 3 inch jic out! the stillen y pipe is the only y pipe that has a 3 inch out i think! its patten'ed , but thats what i got when i called them, but my exhaust now is very deep and really loud!

Well I'm not looking for loud that's why I like what I'm reading about the Tanabe touring. I know that with any aftermarket exhaust it will be louder than stock but I'm not trying to set off car alarms and pissing off my nieghbors. LOL

I want a new exhaust , but I want something that keeps the tone I have. I don't want to sound like a honda. Really haven't heard too many clips and have heard none in person. The only one that I think sounds good is the dual borla.

don't wate your time with y-pipe unless you're changing the entire exhaust. ypipe+stock exhaust = lots of tq loss downlow, minimal uptop gains

if you want exhaust and want to keep the stock catback, do headres+hfcs

If you're looking for a cat-back system that will add a couple of hp and retain the stock exhaust note of the Z, I have heard the Magna Flow cat-back will deliver that. Below is one site that I've seen it.

Replacing the y-pipe and keeping the stock exhaust is fine. You will get a benefit from it, since it is a restriction, and the factory y-pipe back exhaust is not terribly restrictive.

Tanabe Y-pipe + Tanabe Medalion Touring = classy, quiet and some of the best damn good looking pieces I have ever seen

Performance Nissan has them for a decent price. I think they were trying to get a group buy on them at some point-- any updates on that?

There are clips of the Tanabe exhaust on the Tanabe website.

So of all the Y-pipes, the Stillen is the only 3-inch one? What about Nismo or Fuji, and JIC Magic?
