Default Custome Built Exhaust?

So I'm shopping around for a new exhaust. I was planning on the Nismo. Called up my buddy with all the car hookups and he made some calls for me to get me a good deal. The guy he trusts the most wants to build a custom exhaust for it. He said it would be cheaper than the Nismo and would not void the warranty since it's catback. I'm gonna call Nissan tomorrow to check on the warranty issue but what do you guys think about a custom built exhaust? I'm new to these cars, just picked it up a couple weeks ago. He said the tubing is what you're paying for and thats all it is... tubing. He said he can tune it to whatever sound I'm after. I'd appreciate some input from you guys before I come to a decision.

If the guy really knows what he is doing, you can actually get a pretty nice exhaust. My friend got 2 custom exhausts made for his NSX that just sounds wicked. However, he did have one of the better tuners in Japan do it for him

Also this belongs in the intake/exhaust section of the forum

After the 3rd time having to take my "custom exhaust" in to be fixed for shotty workmanship I dumped the piece of ***t in the garbage and put on a real exhaust(stillen ture dual)......Oh ya, the guy's name was Ted.
My advice is you get what you pay for...Go with a trusted name.

Anything you put on or install will void that portion of your warranty! In other words, the only exhaust warrantied by Nissan, is a factory installed Nismo Exhaust!

As the saying goes, you get what you pay for!

All-in-one-box exhaust systems (such as Injen) are exactly the same. You know exactly what to expect. With a custom exhaust, the outcome is, for lack of a better word, uncertain.

If you want a custom exhaust, don’t talk about it, do it.

Thanks for all your help guys. No, his name is not Ted. His name is Jake. He does exhaust work for a few of the dealerships around here and come highly recommended. We actually met yesterday and he put it up on the rack to tell me what he will do. I told him exactly what I'm looking for as far as sound (NO RICE), and he said not problem. He said the exhaust mods should add some top end power, although I'm more concerned with sound. He really seemed to know his ****. I'm gonna take it in on saturday to get it done. He said if I'm not happy he'll fix it for me. I have faith in the guy and I think I'll be happy the first time around. I will post some pics for you guys when it's complete. He also suggested a cold air intake. He said he could get AirRaid or K&N. I told him I'd rather do the intake at a later time after the exhaust is done. Any of you guys have experience with either of these intakes? BTW, sorry for posting in the wrong section, I'm a newbie. Thanks again.

I actually felt a loss on the butt dyno with the K&N (not the typhoon/cai though...). Most people swear by the popcharger but with a little reading youll also find a high flow drop in filter for the stock box provide the same performance, however the pop charger and other intakes sound better.

Got it put on yesterday and I'm really happy with it. It's a Y-pipe back setup, 3 inch to a magnaflow muffler and 2 pretty tuff looking magnaflow tips. I'd like to post some sound clips so if someone can help me do that I will. Hardly noticable at cruising speeds but really opens up when you step on it. Very little drone. Almost has a V8 sound which is pretty much what I was after. I will also take some pics a little later and post them. All in all I'm very happy with it, pipe bends and welds look very clean. Only cost me $550 so its a great savings compared to the Nismo I had my eye on before.

Good news. Do you have photos with the car on a lift?

First attempt to post pics, hope this works. I have some sound clips too. Someone please help me post them. The sound clips were taken by myself so they could be better but it's the best I could do for right now. Sorry, no photos of the car on the lift, I tried to get some decent pics of the setup though.

Not sure if I am feeling that, looks cheaply put together by used piping. No offense.

Sorry you don't dig it. But honestly I'm not concerned with the asthetics of the setup. I just wanted a more aggressive sound and I'm happy with the results. If i wanted something mirror polished that looks like it belongs on a showcar, ofcourse I would have bought an $1100 kit.

Looks like a clean install (nice welds too). Don't worry about what other people say about the looks . . . who cares anyway, no one crawls under your Z to see what you've got under anyway unless you're working on it. It doesn't matter how polish your exhaust is, it'll get dirty & nasty once you start driving it anyway.

BTW, I'd like to see pics where you connected to the y-pipe. Also, what size Magnaflow muffler did you use? I noticed you didn't use the stock tips.
