Default Cop wanted to tow my car because of my exhaust

Title says it all. I was driving around town when a cop pulled me over and wanted to towe my car because of my illegal exhaust, he said just because it's an illegal exhaust that that fact alone would give him the right to towe my car. He changed his mind when he noticed that i had a perfect record and also i'm thinking because i was being about as cool with the guy as i could.
So now i'm kind of fuked, this cop is going to notice my car because well it sticks out like a sore thumb and he is going to love taking the Z away from me.

Besides befriending a couple of local cops and doing a little research on some technicalities on exhuast laws what else would you guys do?

Rs*R exhaust is what i have bolted on btw. I also have a plenum spacer and a jwt intake

Here's your short list of things to do:

1) Research your state laws about how loud your exhaust can be.
2) Get a new exhaust which complies with 1 above.
3) Bolt that sucker on.

End of story, forget about it.

you are never going to win trying to throw legal terms at them. Believe me I have tried on my old car. Get something that is street legal and keep the RS for show or sell it.

I don't know where you live, but I have never heard of anyone getting a car towed for a loud exhaust. Sounds like the cop just wanted to hassle you.

my friend has a hooked up m3, and he has a fairly loud exhaust for a few years now and only 1 cop has ever given him trouble, and that cop has pulled him over twice, just for the exhaust

Whenever I see a cop near by, I short-shift to keep the RPM's below 2,500. Keeps it quieter that way... But they still seem to do a double-take... Haven't been pulled over yet.

No he didn't pull me over because it was loud, it was late at night and i was tired and wasent really pushing it. He pulled me over for speeding 10 miles over the limit which isn't exactly racing down the street. Once the cop got out and talked to me for a while about speeding thats when he started checking out the car and asking me questions about the exhaust.

So are there any Rs*r exhaust owners around that might have dealt with the same issue? Or anyone else with an illegal exhaust?

so original too...

Whats the chance of you seeing this same cop again and him pulling you over? You might think he will recognize you but there is a GREAT chance that he won't he pulls over retards in good looking cars every night I'm sure. Sounds like you kindof pissed him off before, cops generally don't look for things to give you a ticket for. Having a non-carb legal exhaust is a FANTASTIC reason to tow you from the way they see it, its like having a car that has no windshield, its not safe or functional (in this case safe for the environment).

not sure if this really works. But at the M3 forums some guy actually carries a decibel reader gauge thing in his car, whenever he is pulled over he pulls it out and puts in by his exhaust and shows the cop its under 96 dbs.

Anyone ever try this?

An officer has every right to tow your vehicle if he/she feels that it violates the noise code. Just ask all the bikers who have had their choppers confiscated over this.
