Angry Water + AEM intake

Just installed a cold air AEM intake...The car ran so smooth with more power....Yesterday it rained pretty hard and I wasn't driving the car..It was sitting in front of my home..After the rain stopped I went for a ride....The car started stumbling, missing, popping at 2500 rpm's..I barely made it back home again...I wanted the short ram intake but the sales guy told me it was a waist of money so he talked me into this cold air system..What a mistake....He did mention if I submerge the filter I could have this problem...I didn't submerge it at all . I wasn't even driving it during the storm..The filter sits in the right side corner just behind the amber side marker..It seems to be enclosed pretty good where water wouldn't get to that area easily..but apparently something did..Maybe alot of moisture in the air which may have soaked the foam enough to cause a problem. I should have stuck with my original idea about the short ram intake and never listen to this sales guy...Hopefully they will work with me and exchange it....

Default had the exact same problem

i had no idea it could be the cai, but i was coming home rom niagara falls when it started to happen to me, i didnt make it home, had to park the car, i was experiencing crazy shuttering, and unless the car was in the high rpm's it would just shut itself off, also i noticed the next day my exhaust tips were black like a fireplace from miss firing. however when i drove back out to the next moring and she started up and drove perfectly no problems. i was thinking maybe some water got in the coil or something but i guess not, thanks for this post it has helped with identifying my problem. has anyone encounted this problem and come up with a way fix it?

water by-pass valve. it goes on the intake tube so most of the water never makes it into the engine.

Check to make sure your intake is secured properly - it could be loose and you may have a vacuum leak. Something very similar happened to me when I had a CAI on my Tiburon - I didn't tighten it enough and it was loose and causing all sorts of weird things.

i've never had a water problem with any cold air intake. You would literally have to drive in water deep enough to cover the filter to suck in enough water to hurt it. I'm with Skorch on this one. Check all your connections and make sure you didn't get your MAF dirty or get any grease on it.

+1 to checking all your connections (if you have an air leak between your MAF and TB, then your car won't be running right. also check your MAF...it's a bit harder to tell if something is wrong, but ppl have had trouble w/ Short ram intakes as well b/c of oil from the filter messing w/ the MAF electronics.

Injen sells a water resistant hydroshield that works reasonably well. Costs about $23.00. I had the same problem. I brought the hydroshield which solved the problem on rainy days, but not downpours. I eventually switched to a Pop-Charger.

another thing you may want to check is the position of the MAF wiring harness. I didn't angle the harness properly and when the engine itself would move it was rubbing on the hood of the car. Check that out cause your problem sounds similar to mine and it would go above 2500 rpm's. All we did was use some electrical tape and that fixed the problem

I've said it before and I'll say it again.

It's harder to suck air through a long straw than a short straw.

The stock intake >>>>>>>>>>>>> any long tube CAI

I had the same thing happen to me when I was N/A when it rained using the aem cai. Your car is going into limp mode to protect it. I don't recomend those intakes. Get the bypass, or change out intakes. It happenned to me about 5 times. I had to be in 6th gear and going about 65 the whole way home.

You would've have had to have your CAI filter in a puddle sucking up the water. Check your connections.

ZthirtyThr33......I wasn't driving the car in the storm..I drove it after the storm and did not hit any puddles....I already removed that system and I'm buying a Ingen short ram with the totally enclosed heat shield...

I was checking out where the AEM cold air filter was mounted in my Z..It sits right behind the right side corner marker close to the inner protective wheel well cover...The cover has holes at the bottom and slits inside the wheel well...I guess while driving it the other evening enough spraying water from the slits in the wheel well and the holes at the bottom of the inner liner got the air filter wet enough to start choking the incoming air....Why would AEM design this air filter (which is 98.4% dry air efficient) DID YOU GET THAT ,,,,DRY ....WOW Big deal..Like that really matters to me..... ... next to a moving tire and a plastic cover with holes in it to let dirt and water to hit this high efficient air filter...It should have been re-directed another way from fender well and the tire....
What really rattled me is that AEM knows of this problem and doesn't care....I was on the phone with them for an 1/2 hour or so and they didn't seem to care about my water problem...They kept on repeating to me, I must contact the place where I bought it...which of course I repeatedly said back to them ..I already did..that's why I'm calling you the MANUFACTURER !!!!!!...because the place I bought it is saying too bad,,,too late...I hung up before I really lost it....What a joke of a company.....Beware
