no you usually get carbon build up on an exhaust. are you catless? How long does it take for there to be a noticeable amount of build up on the exhaust?

Unless your cats are bad or you have a bad o2 sensor its normal. And changing your exhaust wont do anything.

most likely yea. but unless your getting cel's or something its just normal. Have you changed anything on the fuel system or even the plugs? If they arent gapped right you might be running rich or maybe you adjusted your fuel pressure too high?

I really think its just normal unless you have a cel and if you do it should be covered under warranty.

I really don't get this whole black residue on the exhaust thing. It's almost as if something has been burnt upstream of the tips and passes through them.

No. The primary component for cleaning is the catalytic converter.

what the hell causes that?

Carbon.

Don't worry it's normal. You will see at least a little bit of black residue on any Z or G coupe. Better running just a little rich than lean.
My solution: Titanium tipped muffler. It won't look as bad since it'll blend in lol

this is thick and covers the edge of the tips....it looks like i painted them that way. so if it is bad cats....is that covered under the powertrain warrenty?

I think what everyone is telling you is this is not bad cats, but perfectly normal. If you are really concerned it is the cats, go have a sniffer test done.
