Default Welding Titanium question HELP FAST!

Ok im about to take my exhaust to an exhaust shop becuase as i was trying to take it apart, we stripped 2 bolts beyond the point of repair lol. I called a good exhaust shop around here but the guy said he might have to cut the exhaust, then weld the new y-pipe in place. Like he will cut the stock y pipe at the flange, and cut the exhaust at teh flange after that, then fit the new y-pipe, and just weld it to the axle back since he might have to cut off the flange. Im really bad a explaining **** lol sorry. But anyways, i mentioned it was a titanium y-pipe and he said he has never welded one, im just wondering if there is anything different in welding titanium that he maybe should be aware of. THanks and please reply ASAP!!!! lol.

... What welding shop in Florida could weld Ti? Did you even tell him the exhaust was titanium?

Welding titanium needs to be done under certain circumstances and is not like welding steel. I'd really like to see this unfold. Let us know how it goes.

if he doesn't have experience with it, i wouldn't bother. also, if the flange is of one material and the y pipe is another, the heat properties might be higher for one material than the other. ie one heats up faster than the other one and they won't bond.

You must weld Ti in a vacuum. Best of luck finding someone in the USA who has the facilities.

What Y-pipe do you have?

You can also weld titanium by pack purging and post purging it.You have to make custom shileds and stuff that attach to your torch and behind the work peice so it prevents atmospheric contamination.Titanium has to be TIG weled too and most muffler shops only have a MIG welder.

Ok thanks for the info, hopefully he wont have to weld it, hopefully he can get the bolts off w/o it but idk. I used a grinder that i have here at home and tryed to grind 1 bolt off, and i got the entire head off (the bolt has a circular head, so you have to unscrew it from the nut) i grinded the head off completely, but still the bolt wouldnt come off. I just hope he can maybe seperate them another way. Also, where can i get some gaskets, cause my stock gaskets went missing after i disconnected the y-pipe from the testpipes.

Why don't you try a set of vice grips?

We did, but since the section is right above my torsion bar (i think thats what it is, or maybe called a crossmember idk) its really hard to get the vise in there and seated properly. especially just on jack stands. Maybe thats what they will do at the shop, while it lifted up high enough to actually operate lol. But anyone know anything on where i can get some gaskets?

if the only thing you need out is the damn bolts, grab a hold of them with vice grips and get down to business. If that doesn't work, cut them at the head of the bolt and pull on the other end with the vice grips. They will come out. You may have to rethread it, but it sure enough beats some welder hacking up your expensive *** exhaust. Good luck.

Why dont you just remove the exhaust from the car then and use the vise grips?

We have found that compoud leverage pliers(Snap-on) are so much better then vice grips in certain applications and typically much smaller for tight areas.
