What does the "N1" mean in a lot of exhaust names?

"N1" has become a relatively popular term for a number of tuner companies and their products. It originated, as far as I know, with Nissan. The R32 GT-R had a special, limited production, version of the car known as the N1. It was a lightweight model designed for homologation racing purposes, with no AC and stereo, and reinforced chassis stiffening. Only 220 or so were made, and it was to facilitate and commemorate the success of the new GT-R in Group N racing. Hence, the term "N1", which I have always understood to denote "number one in Group N racing".
The R34 also had a N1 version, which was again light-weight with extra welding to stiffen the chassis, no AC or stereo, lacked ABS and carpet, and sported carbon fiber hood with NACA ducting. Only 45 were made, again for homolagation racing purposes. It's a rare model, and is also the only model of GT-R that Nismo bought back from owners and used to create their limited edition, 500hp Z-Tune GT-R, of which only 20 were made.
The name sounds kinda cool, and the GT-R is a good car to copy from, so it seemed natural that tuner companies would copy the name for parts that are meant to denote racing use or heritage. Even Spoon uses the term "N1" for some of it's more hardcore Honda parts. However, while the term originates from Nissan as a designation for bona-fide racing use in a street-legal application, most of the parts that carry the term today are hardly developed for a racing series or have the development behind them that was originally denoted by the N1 badge on the GT-R.
