350Z INTAKE!!!! Get or Not to Get
Hi, im pretty much new to this forum and my 350, so please bear with me.
I just got my 350Z Enthusiast in Silverstone yesterday and im already planning mods. The first 2 modifications I want to put on are intake and exhaust. Ive already decided Borla exhausts but im having trouble deciding which intake to get. Ive heard a few people saying that it wasn't worth buying an AEM or Injen as there are almost no power gains because the stock intake is very efficient already. Is this true? Ive tried searching the forums and couldnt really find much on this topic. And what could i do to get more power from the intake if the stock is already that good?

Get the AEM or the Injen. Ofcourse there won't be astronomical gains. You won't be going and spinning your tires through 4th gear, but they sound better and look nicer, plus you get a little performance gain.
Christ, it's $200. I wouldn't say it's the best $200 you could spend for your car, but it's not gonna break the bank if you own a Z.

Stick with the stock set up. It's pretty well designed. Arguably one of the best OEM intake design that I have ever seen. Save your money for suspension or the y-pipe/straight pipe. You'll probably get more bang for the buck that way.
All these points are valid. I think it just comes down to how you want to spend your hard earned (or not so hard earned) money.
Either way you go, I'm sure you'll be happy. It's hard not to be happy with the Z.

Hey Silver, where did you get your Enthusiast? How much?
Thanks
Mark
look.... it simple. Do you like your car and are you planning on getting a turbo or s/c soon. if you are then NO. but if its way down the list like in a "COUPLE" of months then yes( that's wut im doin). I got an AEM intake but wished i got an Ingen. If your planning on getting a turbo or s/c SOON i wouldnt waste it cuz your goin to basically going to have to sell it or store it. I got it cuz i LOVE the sound (people stare

Hi "silverstone"
I have a redline- lots of fun. For the intake, just try replacing the filter with a K&N oil-mesh or the blue mesh equivalent (I can't think of the manufacturer- might be B&M???). You can get these at Checker or Autozone or other auto parts places- cost is LOTS less, and will reduce resistance to air flow a bit. You do have to clean it now and then- i do it about every 3000 miles in my son's Porsche and my F40. I have not yet put in the K&N in the Z as I only have 1500 miles on it so far, but at the first oil change- in goes the synthetic oil and a low resistance air filter.
I agree with the general sense that the intake appears to be reasonably designed- and it pulls in cold air from a low-turbulence area behind the upper bumper- so pretty well thought out, and no rocks will get at the filter. For looks, maybe one of the tube add-ons looks better, and maybe resonates differently so the overall sound will change- personally I really like the snarl/growl that develops between 1800 and 2500 rpm...
Good luck

From the sound of it....the intakes seem to be almost for show rather than performance since its such a little gain in HP....I don't mind it looking cool when I pop my hood and seeing the nice polished pipe leading to a pop charger...but first I have to buy a pop charger...and then figure out how to get a polished pipe to replace the stock one.
From hearing all these minimal hp gains from the intakes, I think I might as well just get a Short Ram for the sound. Ive heard of "hydrolocking" in CAI, not sure exactly what that is, but would that still happen in a Short Ram?

The only way you're going to hydrolock a short-ram intake is by driving through a friggen river.
Personally I don't know why anyone spends twice as much on CAIs....they produce nearly no more hp...they only look a little cooler. Plus, once you get the car moving the short-ram intake gets cooler air anyway...
The stock intake is a super design, the stock filter element is the restriction.
I was recommended to purchase one of these a few months ago it has been excellent probably the best replacement there is http://www.gcaindustries.com/

I like the K&N- use them in all 4 cars- cleaning them now and then is a bit messy, but they do seem to work, and did significantly improve the performance in a high performance small block chevy, will add to the Z when the element gets dirty (only 2200 miles on it).
how about ARC Super Induction box then?
www.arcinter.co.jp
it's very famous in Japan specializes in intercoolers and intake boxes
it helps to ram and pressurize air into the box similar but better than the stock air box design.
the air box is designed to keep low-end torque (not like the cone filters) and enhancing high-end power the same time.
this function has always been stated in Jap's car tuning magazines.
