Exhaust y-pipe leaking on G35! What to do?
So my current driveway is fairly steep so my y-pipe barely scratches, after about 9 months of living at my place (and driving in n out) I finally have a leak
in my stock y pipe (it seems to be from the flex joints).
My setup is as follows:
2006 G35 6MT Coupe
Fast Intentions Metallic Cats
Stock Midpipe/Muffler
I am open to options, but I would like to keep the "stock warble" if possible. So this means change out just the y pipe, right?
Few Questions:
Are there any y-pipes that sit higher up to avoid scraping?
Will getting a y-pipe without flex joints prolong the life of it, since it seems the braids are weaker than solid stainless steel.
If I get an aftermarket y-pipe, is it best to use a product such as a Dr Gas reducer cone since most y pipes have 3" piping and the stock is 2.5"? What happens if I dont and connect it using stock gaskets?
Can anything be put under the pipe to protect it from scrapes?
Thoughts? :confused2:

Park car on street?
But seriously it would be a guess at best to tell which y-pipes actually sit higher than the OEM units..
Since your plans are to keep everything stock, I suggest you just find another OEM y-pipe in your local marketplace..

thanks.. Yeah, i've been looking at OEM y-pipes and there's a lot out there, some for free even... i'm also looking at used aftermarket y-pipes in case anyone has one out there.
anyone know the answer to the other ?'s tho?

Did you just seriously ask if there is a y-pipe that "sits higher" ???
I mean, if you raise your engine, headers, cats, and the rest of the car, sure!! idiot

wow you are a fawking moron
Get a new stock y-pipe and take a bigger angle when going up your driveway, brain surgeon

I was able to pick up another stock y-pipe locally in very good condition... installed it and back to normal (for now)... although it was pretty easy doing the swap, hopefully I won't have to go through this exercise in another 9 months
I have the same issue , but my Nismo Y pipe looks considerably worse , how were able to tell that you def had a leak? And to any smartasses out there , there are some drive ways that no matter what angle ur in , you'll scrape .

then don't go up them, park on side of the street or put a 4x4 kit on your z. then you won't damage your ypipe.
if u think it's a small leak, u can take a long flexible tube, put one end near ur ear, the other around ur y pipe and listen for any hissing.
You can try a Y pipe from an HR like shown here LINK. It will have close to the same exhaust note and move the flex joints out towards the sides of the car a little. Unfortunately, it most likely won't help at all unless the problem is some type of unavoidable flaw in the driveway that passes under the center of your car.
On a positive note, even if it does nothing at least you'll be current with what seems to be an emerging new trend for the G

If anyone has a stock HR y pipe, lmk please.
Just for FYI purposes: Broke down and took the car to my local muffler shop , ( been there a couple of times ) and had them check the car . good news : even if Y pipe has holes on the mesh area on the outside there are a couple of tough metal bars underneath the top layer and 2 other mesh layers underneath that, so even if the top has been scrapped off ( like my mine )the y-pipe won't leak. Bad news : one of the resonators on the megan test pipes has kinda broken loose
. And yeah talk about unavoidable flaw in the drive way - I want to take a sledge hammer to it.
