Default Do silencers make a huge difference?

I did a search and didnt find the answer so maybe someone can help me out.

I have a Tanabe Ultra Medallion single ti exhaust, it came with the car and I immediatly swapped it out for the stock exhaust because I thought the Tanabe was really loud. Once I had the system off I realized the previous owner did not have a silencer in the tip.

I was about to trade the exhaust and try a dual setup but I dont think the deal will happen.

I'm willing to give the Tanabe another shot, but how much difference will it make if I get a silencer. And just to be clear, I'm talking about the silencers that bolt up inside the tip. Will it be day and night or will it barely be noticeable. The tanabe website says it would lower noise by 7db. That doesnt seem much.

Mine is legal with the silencer, and illegal without it. It makes a HUGE difference, the only reason I drive without the silencer is that Ohio cops dont care if its too loud, and when the silencer is in, it's too quiet. I can hear myself think too much. It seriously sounds like two different exhausts, in terms of volume AND tone!

AND I have a single with headers, tp's, and a y-pipe. This is possibly the loudest combination for the Z, and it is too quiet with the silencer.

Well for every 3 db sound doubles, 7 db is a huge difference.

are there predrilled holes where the silencers should go? My aam single has predrilled holes, and the silencer I bought didnt do jack to quiet the sound, but its because it doesnt fit in all the way and snug. When I had the agency power and had to drill my own hole to fit the silencer, it went all the way in snug and tight. And it reduced the sound so much I didnt like it and sold it.

Thanks guys for the responses. I didnt think the silencers did that much. I know the Tanabe is a good system, I think I may try it again with a silencer. Although I think duals look alot better when you havent done the rear tuck.

Stevehl, yeah the tip does have predrilled holes. I may try to get the Tanabe silencer that suppose to go with this system. Either that or trade someone for their dual system.

btw 7 db is far less.. take the first 3db off.. and thats HALF the sound.. then take the next 3db off, and thats half of THAT sound level, then another db after that.

7 db is a giant difference.

Physics lesson of the day.

And Im out.. ( drops mic, walks off stage)...

I wish I had the ultra medalion .. they don't even offer it anymore =(

You can try to call up tanabe if they have the silencer available. Although, it always looks weird having a nice exhaust system then you look at the tip you see this weird thing inside lol.

Silences will reduce noise level several decibels. Do not know if you consider this huge.

I didnt think several decibals was that much, but from what has been posted above. I guess it's fairly significant.

I regularly deal with stuff around 95 to 105 db and never thought the difference was that big. IMO the pitch was what really made something hard to listen to or not.

Doubling the sound pressure occurs every 3 dB but "loudness"/"volume" perception is doubled every 10 dB.
