Default The perfect sounding/flowing exhaust

Well, like the title states, I think I found a great combo as far as exhaust goes.

For the last little while I have been trying different things as far as exhaust components go. I wanted a great flowing exhaust that is quiet during normal driving condition (under 3500rpm) and has a nice tone when you open it up. At the same time i wanted to retain the OEM look (dual outlets)

I thought I share what IMO works just great. I had bought (a long time ago) a Megan single 3” exhaust that bolted up to the OEM Y-pipe. This was a nice quiet exhaust and worked well while the car was N/A. Once the turbo stuff came in to play I found that the Megan rear muffler was very restrictive, and I was stuck looking for other options. Instead of buying an entire new exhaust system I started experimenting with different things (that's just how I am).

Megan muffler opened up (just too restrictive):

To start with I bought a Magnaflow single 3” inlet dual 2.5” outlet muffler, and started welding. The end result:

Because this is a straight flow through muffler, I was stuck with a good amount of drone. It was a bit annoying, especially when you are trying to have a conversation during normal cruise conditions.

I did not want to experiment with more mufflers, so I turned to the resonators. I really wanted to get a Magnaflow 3” in/out with a 5” body diameter and 18”-20” body length. Unfortunately Magnaflow does not make such a resonator, and the next best thing was one with a 6” outside diameter and 18” body. I picked one up and went to work. Once I got under the car, I noticed that there is not as much room as I had originally though, and drastic actions had to be taken. Without this mod the resonator would have sat about 1” below the rear skid plate. After a bit of work this is what I came up with:

Fitted:

and complete:

So, for those that have drone issues, just go to your local exhaust shop and have them weld in the largest resonator that you can fit in there. My car also has aftermarket headers, and the car is just a tad louder than stock while cruising, with excellent flow.

I will try to get some audio clips of this. in the near future. Please do keep in mind that the turbo also acts like a muffler, but don't think the tone would change that much if it is removed.

Thanks for the comments guys, will get a video up in the next couple of days. We have a good rain storm on the way, so I won't be able to get a decent video till it clears up. It is just not safe going WOT in the rain or when the roads are wet.

On a side note I also did a custom 3" exhaust for a customer that bought a BP ST kit. I am sure you exhaut buffs will appreciate it. This customer just wanted the piping, no mufflers or resonators, as he went with the largest turbo I offer with the kit:

Nince and smooth on the inside (this is a shot at the Y section on the inside):

Outstanding fab skills BP. Thanks for sharing the info on custom exhaust. Too bad no one makes a resonator in the shape you made yours!

No tips, just a finished 304SS 3" tubing:

Driver side:

Passenger side:

IMO it looks good, others may think that it is too small. Again, this customer did not want anything fancy.

Thanks, and to be honest it was an easy mod to the resonator. Took about one hour to do.

To the rest, thanks for the compliments.

Yes, but my hands are made out of metal.... While I was doing some research on other exhausts, I found that there may be a demand for something like this.

There are many out there that want the OEM look, a bit more aggressive tone, with excellent flow. I think this would fit the criteria.
