Default Borla True Dual Question

I have a Borla TD Exhaust with Megan Racing test pipes on my 03 Z right now. Although I love the sound I would like it to be a little louder. I have been thinking about removing the muffler ("the box") and throwing on straight pipes. Is this do-able? Has anyone done this on a Borla TD and how does/would it sound?

I'm also looking at dropping a bit of weight and I know the muffler weighs quite a bit.

Thanks

I've tried it on mine. I have resonated test pipes as well but I also have a magnaflow x pipe welded in where the original H pipe. I removed the rear muffler section and had 2 1/4" pipes put in to extend the exhaust out the back. So my exhaust went resonated test pipes/ magnaflow x-pipe/borla resonaters. The sound is Amazing. Drone cruising on the highway at 80 mph is similar to a car with a single n1 style muffler. under wot the car sounds like a complete beast. I had mine put on with the borla clamps so I can switch back and forth whenever I want.

If I feel motivated tomorrow I'll pull mine exhaust off, throw the pipes on and get you a sound clip.

Oh and it sounds nothing like a Z with a straight pipes. I have a friend with a straight pipe and it sounds terrible and is uncomfortably loud. My Z with no muffler is loud but the only person who ever complained was my gf

I have never favored buying a cat back exhaust, then doing a ghetto mode for more noise. If you want more noise why not a different cat back?

Yeah if you want that would be great. I know it will be really loud but the Borla muffler just weighs so much. It's just an idea, I really don't want to sound like a Honda.

weighs so much??? are you crazy? stock muffler weighs over 70lbs. The muffler portion of a borla weighs 32lbs (when i weighed mine). That's half the weight. It's not heavy.

It will sound like crap. The whole sound of the borla is from the muffler so when you remove that it won't sound like a borla at all. The resonators in the middle just keep the rasp down. They aren't what makes it sound good.

Just get rid of it and get a ricer exhaust if you want more noise. That's going to be about the result from just using the borla resonators.

The whole muffler does NOT weigh 70 lbs...that's the entire exhaust.

I know b/c I actually weighed both the stock motor and borla on a hanging scale when I swapped them out.

The entire borla system saves ~10lbs over stock, but that includes the savings from the mid pipes and H-pipe vs Y-Pipe as well.

edit: Checked the log I've been keeping. I weighed the OEM muffler at 31.68lbs.

there's no way. I just got back to indiana and my oem muffler is at my house in indiana. I'll be heading back in a few weeks. I know for a fact that the stock muffler isn't 31lbs. I've done a few exhausts on some friends z's here in the area. That stock muffler is noticeably heavier than every aftermarket exhaust i've put on.

This guy weighed his stock muffler at 35.5lbs:

350z dash tech has it at 34lbs

36.8lbs:

Mine is an HR, not sure if that is why it weighs 3-5lbs less than the guys above.

here is a pic of the 2 mufflers in my garage side by side. There is no way you are telling me that stock muffler is the same weight as the borla.

I had to lay on my back and move them around. There is a noticeable difference in weight.

I'm not pulling my borla back off the car to weigh it but i'll weigh my stock one when i go home in a month or so.

I didn't say they were the same weight -- I said that:

1) The stock muffler does NOT weigh 70 lbs
2) I personally weighed the OEM HR muffler at 31.68lbs.

I've listed 3 other sources, one with pics on a scale, of an OEM muffler weighing between 32 and 37lbs. I'm not making this stuff up

then the borla has to weigh less than 20lbs cause there was a good difference in weight holding them both at the same time.

Maybe -- I felt a difference in holding them as well. I'm not sure I weighed the Borla muffler by itself, but I do remember thinking "wow, this is a lot lighter".

edit: I'm not sure I'd say it's much less than 20lbs, though. Since the oem muffler is definitely a more awkward size, it may make it seem even heavier than it really is.
