Closest approximation of Motordyne exhaust?
Hey all,
Can't afford a Motordyne exhaust this year, hopefully next year but no guarantees there either, but was recently thinking to ask this question:
What exhaust is cheaper yet comes closest to having that Motordyne rumbling aggression without drone?
Is there such a thing?
Or a separate question...what is the cheapest exhaust mod that gives a little more rumble or "note" that sounds high end, and not even close to being ricey.
I'm riding a stock '04 350 coupe.
Thanks guys, would really love some of your knowledge to steer me straight.
If it matters, the Motordyne I love for the sound, and I know it would bring some horsepower as well, but if I could just get more rumble without horsepower gains I'd still be happy. Not that I'm not happy now...love the stock Z...just would like to add even more if I could.
Thanks again,

OMG saying don't cheap out on an exhaust is such a joke.
Seriously you guys are full of such bull **** most of the time its ridiculous.
A lot of ebay exhausts are fine, but you won't get the same tone of a motordyne on any ebay exhaust, because of its use of helmholtz resonators. The hks knock off has helmholtz but they are tuned to a different frequency and sound like garbage.
Fitment is the main issue with cheap exhausts, but as long as they have a proper support setup they are fine for durability.

And this is exhaust parts. Exhausts are not very difficult to make, and shouldn't cost very much.
IMHO the motordyne is awesome but over priced. To me running an ebay exhaust beats paying nearly 1k more. Even if I have to cut it and get it rewelded to fit correctly. "OH NO I HAVE TO JACK UP MY CAR AND FIX MY EXHAUST" wah wah. What a joke. No wonder this community doesn't have many FI setups.

I'm saying take two stock Z cars...
Add a knock off exhaust to one and a motordyne exhaust to another!
One is gonna sound better at all rpm range. That's what I'm saying.
EDIT:
I don't even have a motordyne exhaust!

If you want that sound, either make your own custom exhaust and do some good designing (wouldn't be that hard to reverse engineer one), or save up and buy it.

If you're thinking of buying a Motordyne exhaust next year (possibly), then just save up and do it then. No point in buying a ~300 dollar exhaust now, only to have it swapped later. If you're planning on keeping whatever exhaust you buy now, then go for it.
I have yet to hear of a MD replica. The drone is cancelled out by the helmholtz resonators on the TDX2. I have yet to seen another exhaust do it so well, I personally swapped to the TDX2 because of it, and not the sound, even though that was an added bonus. Although costly, I find the almost lack of drone worth it for a DD.
Bottom line: Buy what you plan on keeping. No sense in spending ~$300 temporarily.

Mine is also a DD, i messed around with the exhaust to begin with, just to get some sound.
The problem with the 350 is that it's very hard to get a *good* sounding exhaust, it's not as easy as most cars.
Unless you've got access to pipe and equipment, most people can't do the things required for an unknown outcome.
SS is way more expensive than it was 5 years ago, everything has gone up.
While you can find reasonable quality systems on ebay, the sound and drone is not something they've taken into account, it just costs too much in time and research to refine it.
Hence one of the reasons why the MD is worth getting IMHO.
