Attached is a picture of a "custom" intake setup that I did with a friend.

My friend had spent over $300 on his Injen CAI. With such little results... I felt compelled to not spend near as much money, but get the same results.

(Results being a little change in sound and maybe a horsepower or two. LOL)

I can't lie... the CAI on his 2003 G35 sounded great. It sounds like a small fighter jet is coming up behind me. Seems to really open up the exhaust sound.


Let's skip forward a few steps..

After I installed everything, I had only spent about $75 at the local auto parts store, and had a decent sound difference.

Between 5-6000 RPMs, I can really hear it roar, not to mention the "whistling" noise that I can hear at almost any RPM about 2000.

It really complimented the exhaust work that I had already done. (Straight pipe where the muffler used to be)

I'm LOLing so hard right now, Nice downgrade from your stock intake to pick up some sound.

You lost power, enjoy the heatsoak.

 

Should have kept going with more couplers and bends and put the filter in your bumper.

 

I like your heatshield. How much did it cost to make it invisible?

 

being creative never hurt, but I would honestly stick to a manufactured intake and be willing to spend the $100-$300 on something that is meant for the car as apposed to fabig something up from pieces. Good idea tho.

 

Pop charger would have cost the same. The quality of that filter is ****.

 

Gonna take a big drinks of hot air when in traffic or not pushing it! Even then your filter isn't getting not near as much low density air as your stock air box would.

I'm not a big performance mod junkie, but DO NOT skimp on parts. You're better off buying something used.

 

Nothing cold air about it , it will draw hot air at all times. What you did is build an unshielded short ram. If I remember right you lose 3 HP for every 10 degrees of air. Your setup will draw about 170 degree air. A JWT popcharger with the heat shield installed draws 7 to 10 degree hotter air than ambient ( same as a true CAI ) while moving.


As mentioned , waste of cash. A JWT can be had for around $100 and is an actual improvement over stock.

 

Save money on the install NOT the parts them self....unless you buy a used part, but what you have done so far is an injustice to everything z car. If you show that at a meet people will say WTF.

With that being said I like how you left room for the leaf blower turbo to be added to the engine compartment.

 

What a waste.If anything,you should have dropped a K&N in the OEM box and at least gained something.You actually shot yourself in the foot with this DIY set up.
Yep,sure it sounds different.Thats about it.
If you want to be really creative and want some real results,make an extension from the
MAF THROUGH the grille and mount the filter OUTSIDE of the car.You'll have to do a fake one on the other side or it will look twice as dumb.Real cold air and plenty of air suck'in
for sure.
It will be a unique...one of a kind.

 

OP, as others have said - you have wasted your money because you have actually reduced the performance of your car for the same price that you could have bought something used from a member here that increased the performance of your car.

If you had done it for $20, I could understand being happy with doing it "just for the sound". Oh well, you live and you learn.
