WAY Overly Complicated Intake
#42
So I got to thinking lately about the open space around the edges of the ring. What if I glue in some dense foam to essentially block off those areas and force the air to flow directly into the ring. My simple mind thinks those little spaces might cause some disturbances and or low/high pressure areas. Please reread the title before you think how stupid I seem. And I have not been to the dyno yet, because I haven't had a Saturday off in 4 months.
Here's where I would put the foam. Just making it where the surface surrounding the ring is flat.

Well, finally got a Sat off. Going down to Z1 tomorrow afternoon to get a retune. I'll be putting my ring against the factory ring once we make a few passes. I out the factory '06 ring back in so Jon can tune to that first. Then, one we make a few runs, switch to my ring and see what/if any differences. I'm mainly retuning because I've put my V+ plenum on top of a 1/2" spacer. Expecting at least a couple more HP across the band, and help the top end TQ not drop off so dramatically.

Well, test came back....negligible. started out at 252hp/228tq which is a slight improvement from my tune on just have the 1/2" spacer alone (249/224). Surprisingly enough, my base yielded that I was running fairly rich, which made Jon and myself confused. Made 6 runs with the factory ring and got it up to 261/239. Swapped to my ring and immediately dropped back to initial run and pulled 251/227. Made a couple more runs to try to adjust it, but only hit 259/235. So to say it hurt putting it on, Jon didn't know what to make of it. But we both agreed that the factory ring should go back on anyway. I've got a pretty terrible picture of the curve, but Jon is going to email me a better one later. First attachment is just with 1/2" spacer I did this summer, and the second is my garbage picture of today.

You can definitely see the difference of how smooth the curves are now.

I know the dyno didn't really show a positive for my ring, but I would like to put it back in and put some high density foam in those open areas. It seemed like more air was getting in because there was definitely more whistle when we were making the runs. And I admit I know absolutely nothing about tuning, but those runs with my ring the A/F was slightly higher by about .4-.7. And I guess that's not enough of a difference to make any kind of noticeable adjustments since Jon didn't seem like he would be able to squeeze any more power out. I'm just a little bummed and don't want this ring to go to waste....even though I have already made it go to waste by cutting the Fck out of it, haha.
But I'm not so bummed that Jon pulled another 12hp and 13tq out of my lil engine that hit 100k on the way there yesterday, haha.
