Default Can I Pass Smog In CA?

Hello Guys,

I currently do have JWT intake, samco hose intake, ART pipes and TDX 2 motordyne exhaust .

I will be swapping out my ART pipes to oem cats ( my orginal) tomorrow.

Can i pass smog after this swap?? or should i run the car for 100 miles or so and then go do SMOG.

I never had check engine light with ART pipes nor with any above mentioned mods...Car has not be tuned and these where just the bolt-ons.

car has 48k on the ODO and its an 05 35th... Please advise.

Note: Today took a lexus RX 300 which we replaced the 02 sensor recently didnt pass smog, they asked me to come back after 100 miles..but it had check engine light before.

Mike

Straight pipes will most likely fail the sniffer and the visual, I would just throw on the cats. Does the intake have a carb sticker?

Bro, as i mentioned, I am going to swap to OEM cats, but do I have to run the car for 100 miles before I go to smog...is there something in our ECU that records that the art pipes were present and does not clear till a drive cycle is complete...yes i have C.A.R.B sticker on my JWT...just worried if i have to drive that long before smog or can i go and do my test after the swap.

I know that if the battery is disconnected it will store a code for a certain amount of time, but if you currently don't have any codes present than it should be fine.

Your ECU has to be in the ready state to pass smog. Disconnecting your battery will get it out of the ready state as it erases the memory.

You will most likely want to put your cats on, disconnect the battery, and then drive the car for a little bit. Some sources say it takes 200 miles, but I was able to get the ECU into ready state with just a few miles of driving. Confirmed with an OBD scanner. If you have one or have a friend with one, you can check if your ECU is in the ready state for smog.

The samco inlet tube can be a problem to a picky tech, I would just swap it out.

Didn't California change the smog method? AB2289 states 2000 and newer vehicles only get a visual and a obd hookup functional test no sniffer test anymore. Wondering how strict the visual would be or if they will look the other way as long as it passes obd test?

Just got smogged a few months ago, they definitely still use the sniffer.

I had aftermarket intake on and passed visual.

As long you have your stock cats on and tech isn't a jerk, you should pass

I swapped stock cats on and checked OBD, the cats were never ready from day one i switched to ART...my mechanic said one parameter not ready is OK to pass smog. We went to SMOG place right next to shop, the tech was a real jerk, they knew the car was modified at some point and he was asking all kinds of stupid questions. He even said, "ur going to put ur pipes on as soon as u pass the SMOG right?:..he was under my car for nearly 15 minutes with a mirror and my engine bay was thoroughly inspected. He said he should charge me more due to modifications as he had to check everything..I said whatever.

My car is almost stock , it just looks modified , but power train and engine mods are minimal..finally he ran the tests, since the seat is a fixed racing seat he had tough time to sit and reach the clutch...anyway it passed flying colors, emissions were good...paid him and drove to my mechanic who is 3 shops down and did my bolt-ons...

Never going back to to that picky smog place...i have had smogged before in some gas station type ones and they barely knew what to look..this one was brutal and took almost an hour...i am boosting soon with vortech...i will remember not to go to him again .

Default New vehicle question for old thread

I just moved to Cali from MD and have a 2005 Z, Greddy 18G kit, tuned to 8lbs, blah blah blah.... Only possible redeeming factor is I do have my cats on and I did just pass emissions in MD. From what I have heard and read, CA smog is strict and the visual aspect of the test sounds like I would be screwed. How does anyone transfer an out of state modified car to CA? I see straight pipe diesel trucks blowing plumes of black smoke and somehow they are tagged.... Not to mention tons of modded cars of all types.

For the sniffer test I was thinking about de-tuning to 5lbs and reducing fuel output so it doesn't run as rich for the test. But now that I know about the visual aspect from earlier in this thread, I may be wasting my time. Any suggestions? Thanks I'm advance

I just smogged last weekend. No sniffer test. Just a visual, looked at my gas cap and that was about it. I was in and bout in like 10 minutes. Most of that time he was typing info into the computer.
