Question Y- pipe w/ stock exhaust

Anybody have or have experienced our stock exhaust with a Y - pipe? I was wodnering if the increase in power is subsatanial as well as the sound difference?

I love the way the stock exhaust sounds, but want to gain a few extra ponies. I was considering the Borla True Dual exhaust but I am not sure if I'll like the sound better than stock's.

I have the Y-Pipe/B-Pipe Combo with the stock exhaust set up. The sound is pretty much stock until 4K when it gets a bit more gutteral.

I improved my 1/4 mile time by .1-.2 sec consistently with the addition of the Y-Pipe/B-Pipe. This was prior to the installation of the Crawford Plenum.

Any idea how much horsepower your setup adds? Also I have never heard of a B-pipe, what is it?

Someone from Performance Nissan (either Jeff or Jason, not sure) posted about the Y-pipe being responsible for almost all the power gains from the Nismo exhaust a while back. As a matter of fact, I recall reading in the post that they actually heard this from a Nismo rep.

To further support that, I spoke to the Japtrix guys who told me that their Y-Pipe and Mid-Pipe actually made all of the gains in their dyno tests (around 11 rwhp). They were developing a muffler to match the Y- and Mid-Pipes, but found that it did not add any HP and is purely for sound characteristics.

It's beginning to sound more and more like a Y-pipe (and B-pipe?) is what I'm looking for. Anybody know where I can get a quality Y-pipe and perhaps a B-pipe (if needed)?

350zluvr,

I am in the same boat as you. In fact, despite loosing some top end power, I removed and am selling my Kinetix plenum b/c I'd rather hear more of that sweet OEM exhaust sound. I found the Kinetix cats helped the volume a bit more (without any of that raspyness). To further accentuate the sound, I ordered an NFC motorsport Y pipe. It matches our OEM intermediate (B) pipe ID, is stainless, claims 6 RWHP, and best of all is cheap ($285). Apparently is provides a lower note with a little more volume up high.

If more OEM-like volume is needed after this, I'm going to try headers.

Make sure you listen to various exhausts. A buddy of mine has Stillen headers/exhaust and RT cats and it's surprisingly LOUD! While is sounds very nice and exotic, it's nowhere near OEM sounding.

yeah the stock y-pipe is junk... probably some of the worst crush bends you can get... there is no room for air to get through...

just changing the y-pipe out for a JIC or Fujitsubo and then cutting out the stock resonator and replacing it with a straight pipe or a different resonator and you are set...

the borla exhaust IMHO is not the greatest sounding exhaust for the Z..

Jason, I noticed you sell the bullet/JIC Y-pipe. How much am I looking at total for the products that you mentioned above? I'm wondering how much this project will run me total. Also do you have any idea of approximately how much I would need to pay to get all this installed? What kind of gains would I be looking at? Thanks, I appreciate the help.

Also, if I remove the stock resonator and install straight pipes I would lose the sound of the stock exhaust, right? Is there an issue with the stock resonator? I just really like the sound of the stock exhaust, and would like to keep the exhaust sound as close as possible to stock while adding a few more ponies.

Default Z-1 Y-pipe

What do you guys think about the Ultimate Racing Y-pipe from Z-1 shown here? It looks just about as straight as possible and hence has less restriction of air flow. Has anybody heard of this one or tried it out?

Also, am I understanding this correctly - if you choose to switch to a y-pipe you also replace the cats?

the resontor is what is making the sound of the exhaust... but changing the resontor or the muffler will increase performance but also change the sound...

the JIC y-pipes are still on back order... hopefully here in a couple more weeks...

looking at the z in your sig is making me really want the euro rear bumper...

No, the cats are separate of the y-pipe. The cats can be swapped out with hi-flow cats but they are not part of the y-pipe. They bolt up to the y-pipe, that is probably what you are thinking.

FYI - the order of individual OEM exhaust components from the engine backwards goes like this:

1. Headers
2. Cats
3. Y-Pipe
4. B-Pipe or Mid-pipe
5. Muffler

Some exhausts are true Cat-back and replace the stock Y-pipe, some don't and utilize the stock Y-pipe. Others are true dual (TD) in that they have a separate pipe leading back from each cat (but have cross-over tubes for proper exhaust pulse tuning) such as Borla, Injen, Greddy Evo 2, etc. Lastly, people here refer to straight pipes that replace the Cats as Test Pipes.
