jic y-pipe/nismo exhaust notes?
Anyone have clips or an opinion on this combo as far as sound goes. I have the stock cats for now, and have read test pipes add a real raspy note to this setup as well as other setups. Raspy I want to stay away from.

Jeff has that set up...
it will give a little deeper rumble from the larger collector on the JIC.... just good sound.. nothing bad...
here is clip of the nismo exhaust

For all with the JIC y-pipe:
I just had my JIC y-pipe installed and I'm noticing these loud hissing sounds coming from somewhere.
When I looked underneath my car, I noticed that there's a very noticeable gap between the gasket on one of the collector flanges (only on one side of the flange).
Is this normal? It doesn't look right. I've heard that the fitment for this pipe is excellent but it doesn't look like a tight seal.
It looks like either the flange fabrication is a tad off or my install guy forgot to tighten down one side of the flange.
Can somebody please shed some light on this situation.
I'm thinking that maybe I should have gone to Performance for the install...

i have the exact hisses sound your talking about. I had a gap/leak at the collector's gasket connecting the stock exhaust too but even after i fixed it...the hisses are still there. The mechanic found out the hisses are coming from the flex pipe/joints. They are pretty loud and sound like i have a BOV~!
don't know if there's something wrong with the flex pipes?

It's funny that you made the BOV reference. When I took my buddy for a quick spin, he remarked, "Dude, it sounds like you've got a BOV that's got a mind of it's own."
The flex pipe theory is interesting but JIC isn't the only company to incorporate flex pipes into its y-pipe design. For example, many posters are running the Nismo pipe and I haven't heard them complain about hissing.
There's gotta be a reasonable explanation for this loud sound.
I'm gonna tighten the side of the collector flange w/the gap (the gasket is still intact) and if it doesn't change anything then I'll make a b-line to Duarte to visit the good people at Performance.

I was also thinking about going with the JIC y pipe. Yesterday I was under the car trying to install my high flows and I realized that the Nismo y pipe looks pretty good. I really can't see spending 450+ for an almost identical y pipe.
If you do decide to get one , it looks like a really easy install, a matter of 6 bolts.
Good luck

Yes, I am running test pipes but the hissing sound was barely noticeable before the y-pipe install.
With the y-pipe on, it hisses randomly at idle and I get that loud whoosh sound whenever my foot comes off the throttle. The funny thing is, people within earshot probably think I'm running a TT setup.
The other thing I noticed about the y-pipe is that when I'm downshifting to slow down, (for example:creeping up to a stoplight) there's a crackly warble type of sound which is reminiscent of a larger bore motor with a healthy exhaust. That's a sound I can live with...

This is probably reaching but is it possible to install the y-pipe upside down? In other words, is there a right side and a wrong side as far as installation is concerned? It doesn't seem like it should matter as both sides appear to be identical.
In the Maxima forums, there used to be a Y-pipe that had a notorious "bees in a can" sound that was caused by a particular type of flex section. I think it was b/c those particular flex sections were not "lined". Anyway, you might want to investigate that.
[From my experience they're not identical and i confirmed this with wren.]
If this is true, maybe mine was installed upside down from the get-go. And perhaps, this is why I'm getting the leaking sounds.
For those of you in So Cal, you might want to be wary of SuperAutobacs' installation department. The people I dealt with were very nice but they also struck me as being really young and inexperienced. You live and you learn.

I would think it would be near impossible to install it upside down. If you hold the JIC y-pipe by the 3" collector and look down the pipe, it should make a slight V shape with the bottom of the V pointing down. By installing it I can say I think it would be near impossible to line up the flanges if it were upside down, as the angle it makes is significant enough to throw it off if it were upside down.
ps- I loved my JIC y-pipe and would have kept it, it made no hissing or anything, just deeper, freer flowing exhaust. I sold it because I needed money and because it wasn't optimal with my stock 2.25" exhaust.
