Break-In period and Mobil-1
Okay here's the deal folks,
Taking a road trip to Texas, approx 2200 miles round trip. Wife and I really want to take the Roadster. Currently has about 450 miles, and we are leaving next week (Thursday).
I will probably put another 300-500 miles before we go.
So my dilemma is:
It shouldn't hurt the break-in, since I have varied the miles for at least a 1000 miles and I will vary the speeds when we travel for the first 200 miles? Now my next ?
I have Mobil-1 with a Mobil-1 oil filter just waiting for an oil change.
Do I,
1. Change with Mobil-1 Synthetic before I go (odo at 1000 miles)?
2. Wait until I get to Texas (odo at 2000 miles)?
3. Or wait until I return and get the dealer to change my oil with regular oil at 3750 or three months. Then change to Mobil-1 at 10K?
I have heard that you need to change the original factory oil sooner than 3750 miles, like 500-1000 miles, since there is a lot of break-in material, ect, that needs to be flushed from the original oil?
BTW, we own a Maxima and can take that car, but we really wanna enjoy this trip since we are vacationing near my parents home (Port Aransas, Tx, right on the beach in South Texas).
Will taking my Z in any way damage it in the long run?
Thoughts?

I would change early with Mobil DriveClean (mineral oil) right before you go. A G35 owner had their oil Blackstone tested at 1000 and they said it was comparable with oil that had 3000 on it already. Youre going to have alot of fuel dilution during breakin, not so much metal.
I dont think changing this early to syn is a good idea on the VQ35. At least not on our new VQ35 with such light ring pressure. Go syn when you get back. No rush, while unlikely it would cause a problem changing to syn early, why risk it?
I took a 2200 mile trip (Little Rock to Savannah and back) a few months ago in the G35C. It was an absolute blast..
I also had a 5g maxima (timw on max.org) and I was worried I'd miss it as a roadtrip car.. I really dont.. at all.

oh, on the mileage.. while probably not good to take a trip like that under 1000 miles, if you've been in alot of traffic, you probably have even more hours on the engine than someone with all hwy miles. Just a thought.

change oil at 1k. You'd be surprised at all the metallics you'll see in the oil. Then run mobil 1 syn from then on. It doesnt matter how you break in the engine. Just be easy on it the first 1k and you'll be fine. Don't buy into the bull$hit.
Have a safe trip

Check the forum at www.bobistheoilguy.com . These people are absolutely crazy about the topic. The general consensus there is that you should use dino oil for the first 10,000 miles and then switch to synthetic oil. They cite the reason being that the VQ35 engine takes 10,000 miles to fully break in.

for what its worth, I drove my car 600 miles home when I picked it up, and also switched to synthetic at 1000 miles. I started burning oil early on, about 1qt/3750 miles, At 15000 I put a supercharger on, and at 27000, it eventually wound up at 1qt/600 miles. I just got the engine replaced. Whether or not the highway drive and early synthetic did it or not, I don't know.
I would get the oil changed before you go, and when you get back, with regular oil, and then wait awhile for synthetic.
