Exclamation CRANK POSITION SENSOR *RECALL*

Thanks to Phile for pointing this out.

As some of you may have read here: https://my350z.com/forum/showthread....7&page=1&pp=20

I as well as other members have experienced total power loss/shutdown at highway speeds when shifting into neutral/coasting! This is obviously VERY dangerous and should be addressed IMMEDIATELY!

It only applied to a certain vin # range supposedly, but I have heard of other cars outside of the vin# range with the problem also.

I could be totally wrong about this, but if I'm not, i'd bring your cars to the dealer right away and mention this. Do a little research.

I just hope everything gets taken care of. This situation that keeps happening to people is potentially VERY dangerous!

http://www.nissanusa.com/form/0,,ac...d-51054,00.html

Here is the recall info on their website. Although they say only about 146 350z's are affected, I do not think that particular number has any merit. There were several threads about this issue, and many of the threads pointed out news stories where nissan reported approximately 2 million vehicles were affected that were manufactured between 1998 and 2003.
2003 350Z Engine Sensors

Reason for Recall
On some 2003 350Zs, there is a possibility that the engine might stop running while being driven if the crank position sensor fails. This may also result in the "Service Engine Soon" light coming on or reduced engine power. If the engine stops running while driving, this could result in a crash without warning.

What Nissan Will Do
In order to prevent this incident from occurring, your Nissan dealer will replace the crank position sensors. This free service should take about one hour to complete, but your Nissan dealer may require your vehicle for a longer period of time based upon their work schedule, or parts availability.

What You Should Do
Contact your Nissan dealer at your earliest convenience in order to arrange an appointment to have your vehicle repaired. If the "Service Engine Soon" light comes on, contact your dealer as soon as possible to have your vehicle inspected. Please bring this notice with you when you keep your service appointment. Instructions have been sent to your Nissan dealer. If the dealer fails, or is unable to make the necessary repairs free of charge, you may contact the National Consumer Affairs Office, Nissan North America, Inc. at P.O. Box 191, Gardena, California 90248-0191. The toll free number is 1-888-737-2647. You may also contact the Administrator of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 400 Seventh Street SW, Washington, D.C. 20590 or call the toll free Safety Hotline at (888) 327-4236.

Ok this is interesting. Now i can see this is the cause of engine shutdown and power loss. The other question is...

This wire already causes a problem. Does it also bust the myth about possible pre detonation and damaged low boost FI motors due to this wire? Can this faulty wire be the cause of these "probable problems" ?

The Nissan USA link doesn't work, can you post a link to the webpage with the actual recall?

Try this one:

BTW...the information right below the quote on the first post is the actual information found on that page.

My vehicle falls into that VIN range. Today on the way to work I stopped by a nissan dealer and asked them about it. They checked their system and said they saw no recall on my car. I guess I'll have to print it out and take it back, or go elsewhere (this dealer is conveniently located, but are ********).

I took my 350 by the local Nissan dealer with the recall paperwork in hand and they said their computers showed no recall and sent me on my way. My VIN also falls in the range of affected vehicles. What should I do?

Try a different dealer? Call local media? It is a recognized recall notification on Nissan-USA's main site. The dealership has to acknowledge it. They may not have it in their computer system, but have them go to www.nissan-usa.com and look under recalls.. they cannot dispute that.

For those whose VIN is within range and experienced this problem, at how many miles did the light sensor go off?

Thanks in advance

I got a notice in the mail about 8-10 months ago. Took it to the dealer. They ordered the part and installed it. Took them about a half hour.

They sent notices to a little over 300 Z owners. If your car is in that vin and date range make sure you get it checked out. The date is the important part.

Note: this only affected the first ~330 cars off the 03 line. A good portion of which were test and media cars.

DOES THIS APPLY TO 05 350z? My car is doing this and it gets annoying. The car turns off while I am on the expressway and I go into neutral. Do you guys know if the recall will cover my car since its a 05? Thanks for the help.

I would NOT say you aren't covered bro. Although my particular thread apples to early models, your car is definitely exhibiting VERY real issues that should be addressed by your dealer and warranty!

The recall won't cover it (what he asked) but if you car is exhibiting any odd behavior, it being new, will be covered under the regular warranty.

mine is #42, and i had mine fail about 100 miles out of town doing 80mph passing a semi around a blind turn. halfway around the engine died, luckily i had enough speed that i was able to get around the truck. nissan roadside assistance would not come get me unless i paid an additional $400 to the towing company and they would only take the car 100 miles in the opposite direction from where i lived. luckily i had a friend not far away and i towed my Z on a tow dolly and parked it right in front of the nissan show room!!! told them they could push it from there!!! needless to say i was pissed.
anyway, they did recognize the recall and it was under warranty. btw-this is the sensor itself and not the shielded wire some guys are switching to. that is just to protect the signal coming from the sensor.
