Default miss shift... might have done damage....

so the story goes im leaving the movie theater and this mustang wants to play. Well anyways im getting on to the highway and i shift from third to second(put on flame suit) pretty hard. i didnt get to see how high i went but i know it was past 8k. well now my speedometer is off for some reason. im going about 70 and it says 90 and when im stopped it says 20 and then slowly falls to 0. i dont know whats up but i pulled over and shut the car off for a minute and it is still off. whats the deal. i guess my question is if i take it to the dealership will the computer tell them that i miss shift? My buddies RSX threw a rod this way under warranty and the dealership told him tough luck, this falls under abuse and we dont have to cover that.

brandon( has never done anything like this before and only has 10k on his Z)

Did your engine light go on??? if so then it definetly recorded the 8000+ rpm and i doubt the dealer would replace anything becuase they will know it was driver error... if the CEL didnt go on then you might have a chance that it didnt log that RPM but im not 100% sure.... get more opinions first..

spedo error and miss shft are different things,

If you damaged something in the engine / tranny you would have bigger issues.
The spedo issuse could be considered a safety issue and they should adress it immediatly. If they give you any hassel about you misshifting tell them "so isnt that a different part?"

yeah its still messed up and i have no idea why miss shifting would cause the speedo to malfunction. its weird. the dealership was my last resort but i guess i have no other choice.

My tranny is particular picky about going from 3rd-4th hard and I've shift from 3rd-2nd a few times and caused a high RPM spike... I've never seen the RPMs shoot to 8000 as it is limited, but I've bounced it off the limiter several times hard and I have no issues thank god... Usually I'm pretty quick about getting the clutch depressed again and getting it into 4th, but the spike still isn't cool.

My speedo has never gone crazy from it though. I wouldn't worry about it unless you hear rod knock or some other crazy engine noise.

Like I said, this happened to me at least 3 times and and no issues.

yeah the car runs fine from what i can tell, no noises. You know ive bounced of the rev limiter a few times come to think of it, but this time it went right through it. strange. i wonder why that is.

Can someone tell how the digital speedo is connected to the regular one? they are both reading the same wrong speed. does the ECU control them both?

Its funny you say that, because I did the same exact thing twice in a row yesterday and about made my heart stop. I havent started my car up at all today for fear of something totally wrong with it. Makes me feel good that Im not the only one that did that.

You guys do know you can set the rev limiter lower so as not to spike it.

In the case of mis shifting, the rev limiter will not keep your motor from going over a preset RPM. If you accidently downshift when intending to up shift, the speed of your vehicle is going to determine how high your engine over revs. Not the rev limiter.

if you're talking about on the first digital gauge in the center, that is only a setting where it tells the shift light start to come on, it can't raise or lower the rev limiter

Agreed. Usually the most simple answer is the best.
