I have an 05 6mt Z and the weather got a bit cold here last week. I took my car out one day when it was about 38deg outside. Started the car, let it warm up for about a minute, then I left my apt.
well the first time i went to upshift to 2nd the shifter would not enter the gear and i heard a buzzing sound. it wasnt a grind, per se; rather it was an audible "bzzzzzzz" sound and the shifter vibrated a bit. well i quickly put it in 3rd and it was all smooth. at the next light when i went back into 2nd it was totally fine. i have not heard had it happen since then and its been about a week.
i know a grind sound is very harsh and like a high pitched "GRRRRR" sound. this one was more mellow, deeper, like feedback from a speaker.
any suggestions? is this common when the Z isnt fully warmed up? i know our trannies are notchy (to say the least), but i have never had this happen before.

I've never had mine not want to enter a gear, but on cold days like last week in houston I will get a rather loud sound that I would descibe different, mines more like a whirling sound coming from the tranny, but a "bzzzzz" sound could be said . This happens during 1-2-3 when the tranny oil would still be very cold. The shifts are never rough nothing else happens other then this noise. Once the car is up to temp I will not hear this noise again.

i have the same thing. if i dont drive my Z for a day or two, the first or second shift into 2nd makes contact with something. i took my Z out for a short drive yesterday after letting it sit for a week and sure enough the first shift into second feels like something grabbed it a bumped it back.
not exactly a grind like my first tranny did into 3rd that sends a chill down your spin but definitely something a little off. after it does it maybe once the rest of the drive is perfect.
and it doesnt matter if you shift slow or fast. its done it for me both ways
by the way i have the replacement 008 tranny

mc350z,
you know i know axactly what you are talking about when you say "bumped it back". my 3rd gear does that to me often. i'll shift and when its fully in the gate i'll feel something push against the shifter like its trying to push it out. as soon as i feel it its gone. i dunno its been doing that for as long as i can remember. i hope its nothing bad

Hmm.. I have an '03 and my tranny grinds pretty badly when it's cold outside. This affects 3rd and 5th. If I get in and out of gear, it constantly grinds while going in. Once things warm up a bit the grinding disappears.

I got something similar. I got an 05 Enthusiast with 38K. On cold mornings, it grinds from 4th to 5th at approximate 4000-4500 rpm. Then it goes away for the rest of the day. I drive it everyday. It's happened 3 times the past month. I'm getting fed up with this crap. Maybe when they bring back the Supra, I'll have to strongly consider trader her in.
