Exclamation One last try to fix rattle....

Ok folks, here's the story. I posted a few weeks ago that I had an annoying rattle comming from the back of the car. I have narrowed it down to the hatch since when I raise the hatch and drive around, there is no rattle. As per the dealerships suggestion, I tried moving the lower latch around to see if that would fix it, no luck. I've moved it left, right, up, down, etc. I pulled off the plastic piece on the underside of the hatch, nothing loose in there. It has to the latch that is causing this problem, it is not loose or anything. Hopefully someone has figured this out. As always, any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanx,
-jason

Perhaps the hatch is not closing properly or all the way. Maybe when it is closed it is not going all the way down because the mechinism that recieves the hatch is not allowing it to close all the way. The place where the hatch closes... Have you checked that out?

also double check the contact points of the hatch to the body. not sure what the z has but SUV and wagon tailgates have "stoppers" there. my wagon used to squeak so i put in UHMW plastic sticky things on them.

you should pull off everything you can from the hatch, see if the rattle happens to go away...it may not be the hatch fram itself....

Im pretty sure it has something to do with the latch on the hatch since when I drive with the hatch open, the rattle is gone. I'm trying to get used to it, but it is like having a fly in the car, ie. VERY ANNOYING!

i went to dealer to let them fix it. They told me that there was a problem with my rear axle and that they fix everything. well when i got my car back i drove around and the noise is still there so i will take the car to the dealer again and demand that they have to fix it.

Yeah wondering here too. I got some funny rattle (sounds like a loose bolt or washer sometimes). Curious to see if your issues may be the same. I only hear the rattle when accelerating from a stop in first gear and very rarely at the beginning of second gear. but it doesn't happen all the time!?!?!?!?

i have the same problem! hard acceleration in first develops a metallic rattle - not plastic.

I got a weird noise coming from the back hatch area too. Sounds like a pen is rolling around and clink clinking on the side.

Dealer said the hatch shocks are bad, they ordered a new set.

I drove around with the hatch open and the noise looked like it was gone so I am hoping this will solve it.

Did you guys figure yours out?

Still have my rattle, like something tapping against something plastic. Let me know if solves your problem and what it ends up costing, my warr. is up in May, maybe this will be covered.

Mine is covered until may as well. I am bringing it in on april 3rd. I will post if the noise is gone.

My noise is plastic\metalic. Like a light metalized plastic object like a cheap aluminium pen clunking against something similar. Damn annoying over bumps and bumpy surfaces.

I remember someone saying that there was a plastic screw fastening the plastic cover that had broken off. Something like that.

Is there any chance that it's the hatch springs? Maybe try the penny trick to keep more pressure on the springs. You could have small springs that have too much room or something. Just a thought.

Sevs2k- When you say "hatch shocks", do you mean the ones that keep the hatch up, or the two small black ones that cushion the hatch when they come down?

I can't seem to find the pic I want to post here but I think he's talking about the ones that keep the hatch up, NOT the little numbs that have springs hidden in them. The numbs are just for popping up the hatch when you press the Open button.

After putting on my pro1 exhaust i developed a rattling sound in the hatch. I know its some of those plastic interior panels back there. Ive took it apart three times now, put in foam insulation tape, used silicon on the plastic fasteners. Everytime I take it apart a fastener breaks, so I hafta order new ones from nissan. And its still makin that damn sound. I just cant pinpoint where its coming from. I guess ill hafta have someone drive while i crawl back there and listen for the sound.

Have you thoroughly checked the strutbar? Those plastic pieces are really prone to rattling. I think that's what I'm going to set my sights on next.
