It's probably injector noise. I thought this same thing at one time. I asked about it at a local shop, and they confirmed that it was the injectors firing, not valve tap.

a. Make sure you are using 91 plus octane gas.
b. Have you altered the timing?

Valve lash is a symptom of a worn out engine. I might expect to experience it at 150,000 miles.

I have complained at my Nissan dealership before about a valve tap, they said they didn't hear one. To me, it's exactly what it sounds like. I can really notice it when pulling up where a wall is next to me, for eg. like a going through a drive threw window. Anyone else notice this?

^ Yep. It's most likely injector noise. The injectors on this car are pretty loud. Check/change your oil, but beyond that, I wouldn't lose any sleep over it.

I had a similar noise esp. when the engine was under load. I got same suggestions about valve tap or injector pulsing or oil level, but I thought it was predetonation. Well the service techs at the dealership said they coulnd't reproduce the sound so I took the service manager for a spin and he said "yup, spark knock". Finally had them advance the timing 2 degrees (which is the maximum change + or - that the ecu will hold) and the noise is affectively gone. Don't know if that helps at all but I figure I'd put it out there.

Yea, I had a 3000gt a while ago and they had crazy tapping noises. My mechanic told me the same thing, not to worry about it. BTW Kcobean..love your Z.

I hear some weird tickish sound too.. just noticed it several days ago. Mine sounds like it's from the wheel area, though.

I had valve ticking noise that progressively got worse over the course of a few months a few years back. The dealer actually ended up taking apart the passenger side of my valvetrain and found that one of the lifters was defective/ weak which was allowing the valve stem to puch a divet into the lifter itself. My Z is actually starting to do it now on the driver's side and just took it in to the dealer. I'm hoping they think I'm crazy and it's just the injectors, but I have a bad feeling that it's happening again.

Is it happening then the temps are higher? What viscosity oil are you using?

I've tried to find information about this. When driving along in 6th at about 70mph, if I accelerate to pass, there is a slight rattling noise that I attribute to valves. Yes, I use 91 octane, and the dealer changed the oil about 500 miles ago. It's a 2006 with about 2200 miles on it. Do you think this is valves, something else or no problem?
