Default Oil for Z

Not really shure where to post this but i figured this would be fine. What oil do you all use. I recently (2 days ago) put in Pennzoil Platinum 5W-30 and later i was told that i was supposed to have put 10W-30. Will my car be fine??? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

5w30 will be fine. Typically you would run this weight in cooler climates to aid in cold-starting. The 5 refers to the cold viscosity of the oil so a 5 wieght oil will be thinner at start-up than 10. Both are essentially the same at operating temps. Don't sweat it you're fine with what you have. If you live in a warmer climate, switch back to 10w30 next time you cahnge it out.

I run 5W30 all year. See, 5W30 encompasses all the temperature ranges that 10W30 does, AND it can handle colder weather as well. Some people use 10W30 in summer and 5W in winter.

Mobil 1 Synthetic is easily the best oil to use. A 5 quart container can be bought at Wal-Mart for about 22 bucks.

5w-30 is ideal for the valley.

Mobil 1 seems to burn faster in my 350Z motor so, I switched back to regular oil and no more oil consumption.

The molecules in synthetic oil are smaller and therefore find leaks easier..... but burning? How much oil did you go through in a regular cycle?

About 1 quart or 1 bottle of oil. Maybe they do leak somewhere since it is synthetic oil. But, I was also told by a reputable shop to use regular oil in our engines. As, it will stop the oil consumption problem with sythetics.

I not from the valley, but I go there regularly. I have friends that have family in Brownsville. I stayed in the valley for a week during hurricane Rita. I'm from Houston. My family also likes to visit Progresso alot. We stay in Weslaco and cross the border to go shopping...ect. There's alittle cantina just south of the border I like to visit. It's inside the mercado. $15.00 goes a looooong way.

There is more BS about motor oil than most any subject. Check out this website for some more information aka BS. http://www.amsoil.com/ However for me I use Mobil 1 5W-30. I change my oil every 3K miles and it is usually on the oil filler cap what viscosity to use.

I just did my 2nd oil change with mobil 1. The oil looked fairly clean but I was a quart low. I never saw the car burning oil but if you search through the forums enough you will see that I'm not the only one that has experinced this. If any more disappears on this cycle I'll be trying a different oil, still syn but something other than mobil.

Ive heard only the best about amsoil. I chose not to use synthetic because I change my oil every 4k miles anyway, so i dont want to deal w/ synthetic oil burning, which is an issue is MANY cars, not just the Z VQ. Dyno oil may be subject to coking (which is rarely an issue in the VQ) at higher temperatures, but, if regularly changed, it wont be much of an issue. 5W-30 is probably the best choice for all regions of the US of A, and it probably makes more hp :-p

Cool

Out of all the cars I've owned, the engine in my Z seems to run the hottest.

I use QS 5W-30 full synthetic and am carefully watching the levels until I "learn" how my car behaves. The major advantage of synthetic is that is more heat resistent than the "dino" oil. I've read on these forums that synthetics "burn" more or "leak" more than conventional oils, but so far, I've had no problems. No leaks, no burning.

I'm a firm believer in synthetics, and If it gets any hotter up here, I may as well be in Texas!

BaTMan_4, you'll be OK if you use 10W-30 in the summer. I don't know how cold it gets in Texas in the winter.
