Angry Throttle Chamber needed replaced?!

So yea, I just got home with my Z from the dealership.

I was driving it home Friday, and pulled up to a stop light. The check engine light came on, the slip light went solid (even though traction control was off) and the car could HARDLY pull into the parking lot right beside me.

I got it towed (thank god for flatbeds) to the Nissan dealership 9 miles away (thank god for AAA) for only $12.

So, they call me today, and tell me that the throttle body was never cleaned, and needs replaced. It will costs me approx $1200.

I **** my pants, say ok, and they tell me it will be ready today.

So I pick it up, and it runs great, and I drive home. The part and labor for that specific thing was around $850, and I had them change a few fluids while they were at it, PLUS tax...

I was just wondering, has anyone EVER heard of this happening?!!! and WHY THE HELL DID IT HAPPEN!!!!! I've never heard of cleaning a throttle body assembly, or it breaking!!! WTF?!

The part costs almost $600, which isn't far from what google told me ($525 on some random website).

Did they actually show you the dirty / broken throttle body, or did they just TELL you it was broken?

I know the TB's have being going bad on the G35's bound to happen on the Z's as well. Usually replaced under warranty though.

I got extended warranty for issues like this, thank god. My TB is pretty dirty and i've only driven for 15k miles. The odd part is, its on the inside part of the plate, not on the outside plate. I checked it out while installing some parts, and I figured im going to clean it in another 10k miles.

Im interested in more input on this ---Iv never heard of such a thing- I tend to spray TBs every so often cuz the butterflys will hang up a little or not go to full Idle position. But other than that a TB is basically just a Big air valve. Unlike a carb,no small orifaces or jets
Theres a throttle bore a shaft and a butterfly. What can go wrong?

Couldn't you clean the TB with something like seafoam to prevent and possibly remidy this?

kornyman14,
I take it you were out of warranty as far as the 3yr/36mo? The 5yr/60mo I don't think would cover it since it generally covers lubricated parts on the power tran.

I use carb cleaner in a spray can with the nozzle and do it off the car. Couple squirts then let it soften then a couple more --blow it with air ---Kinda avoid the bores where the shaft goes through incase there is a bushing that doesnt like carb spray

AND if there is that much crap downstream from the butterfly ---Id want to find out why

Yea i was out of the warranty, which BLOWS.

I didn't see the part specifically, but I'd hafta to say, I'm half tempted to ask for it just so I can see how dirty it really is and if I can clean it.

Edit: the previous owner had an extended warranty, which expires next year, but I can't get it from his name to mine because I got it at auction :-(

Chances are its gone ---- Always ask for the old parts ---It keeps the bastards honest. I own a Garage and I keep replaced parts so I can show them and explain what the prob was. If u find out something let us know. And Id like to hear from the G owners as to what the deal was as far as their experiences.
